Backlash as Yahaya Bello Uses Kogi Government Letterhead After Leaving Office

Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has come under intense criticism after posting — and later deleting — a congratulatory letter to the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff (Lt-Gen Waidi Shaibu) written on a letterhead with the official Kogi State Government logo, even though he no longer holds office.

The letter, bearing the state coat of arms and Bello’s signature as “Executive Governor,” sparked outrage online as critics accused him of clinging to power and blurring the line between personal identity and public office.

Bello’s Controversial Letter to the Army Chief

In the letter, Bello congratulated the new Army Chief but included a line that quickly drew attention: “It gives me renewed hope that my worthy successor, His Excellency Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, will now have you in his corner as he continues to tackle insecurity in his domain.”

Observers said the remark was problematic because it implied the Army Chief could “belong” in a governor’s “corner,” distorting the military’s federal command structure.

Public Outrage and Online Reaction

The civic-accountability platform @Kogi_Xcommunity first flagged the issue, writing: “Yahaya Adoza Bello, former Governor of Kogi State, has deleted his personally signed letter to the new Chief of Army Staff after facing backlash from netizens.”

Reactions flooded X (formerly Twitter): @EmmanuelO_K said, “Even after leaving office, Yahaya Bello still writes like a sitting governor. It’s embarrassing.” @KogiWatchdog called it “a breach of protocol,” while @AyoolaWrites added, “Leadership is knowing when to let go.”

Some supporters argued that the letter might have been issued by aides using outdated stationery, calling it a “media oversight.” Others dismissed that claim as “damage control.”

Analysts Condemn ‘Power Hangover’

Public-affairs analyst Yusuf M.A. described the episode as “a case study in power hangover.”

“The Chief of Army Staff reports only to the President, not to any governor,” Yusuf said. “To imply that a governor could ‘have’ the COAS in his corner is institutionally wrong and politically dangerous.”

He noted that Bello’s reference to Governor Ododo as “my worthy successor” reinforced perceptions of a godfather complex. “Bello speaks as if he still runs the state by proxy,” he added.

Political analyst Dr. Ladi Olatunde said the incident underscored the importance of optics in leadership: “When a former governor uses official letterhead, it sends a message that the office and the individual are inseparable — undermining institutional credibility.”

Timeline of the Controversy

Friday 24 October 2025: Bello posts the congratulatory letter to COAS Waidi Shaibu on official Kogi letterhead.
Saturday 25 October: @Kogi_Xcommunity flags the letter, sparking nationwide criticism.
Saturday night: Screenshots trend under #YahayaBello and #PowerHangover.
Sunday morning: Bello deletes the post without explanation.

Commentators said the episode reflects a recurring theme in Nigerian politics — the inability of some former leaders to detach themselves from the symbols of authority.

“Statesmanship begins when the title ends,” Dr. Olatunde remarked. “But for Bello, the trappings of power seem harder to shed than the office itself.”

Though the post was deleted, screenshots continue to circulate online, ensuring the debate over ethics and political decorum remains alive.

So,he left office with government property which he still uses fraudulently.

This man, criminality is still running in his blood.

It's a matter of time, when all his backbones and godfathers has left office,he will then realized that power is transient.

All these politicians seem to think that they own the states they govern or have governed. Tinubu still rules Lagos. Wike controls Rivers, Umahi, dictates what goes on in Eboyi, Ibori still controls Delta state (even when serving a jail term in the UK), Ododo, submits to Yahaya. Etc.

Yahaya Bello is the current governor of Kogi State. He’s on his 3rd term in office and will possibly do 4th term.

Yahaya Bello is still walking free, marrying new wives, and using the Kogi State Government letterhead even after leaving office, while the EFCC chairman who swore to ensure that he would be prosecuted or resign has yet to fulfill his promise

4th term is not sure, that's why he is running from pillar to post trying everything possible to look relevant and trying hard to make tulumbu feel he is for him..

Fact, same man has never won any election even primaries in his state, result had to be written for him in his state, he came in through an inherited vote and of late Audu and for the second term, it took the intervention of Abuja to rig him in, force helicopter had to be deployed to shoot voters from the sky, inec staff kidnapped to write results for him and there was carnage in kogi, after his tenure, he had to again write result for his predecessor both in the primaries and main election and Abuja help him sealed it...

His constituency is the least in that state in term of voting strenght and produce the least votes, but some how he want to portray himself as one strong politician which he is not.

Left for him alone, without Abuja support, he can't even win the chairman of landlord association in his constituency not to even talk of cancellor...

How you are not ashamed defending this act is worrisome.

Why did he delete the first post if he was correct?

Where did you grow up?

What I see is personal letter

No office is mentioned

As former gov of the State, he can still use state coat of arms, by the way he is still m'a member of kogi state council

You people should try to always be logical in your response.

The fact that he used State Letter Head Paper as alleged might be correct, but the one posted on here is his personal Letter Head Paper and that's what the person you quoted is pointing at.

When we say wailing is not good for mental health, you will start kicking.
When a man is already been charged to court and the case is already ongoing in court, is that not the meaning of prosecution?. Or is it the EFCC by itself that will pronounce judgement on the case before the court?. If the man was given a bail by the court, how is that the business of the EFCC Chairman?.
Atleast, opposition requires intelligent people not some keyboard noisemakers that knows nothing other than wailing.

It is quite unfortunate that you can not differentiate between the general coat of arm from the state logo (seal)

Emotion has overridden common sense.

If it's the letterhead attached up there, that's definitely not Kogi state's official letterhead. That's a personal letterhead.

This was the original one he posted before deleting it.

Fro the picture there's nothing that shows it's from the Kogi state government.
That looks like a personal letterhead, companies or even an individual can do it too depending on the person/organisation you're writing to.
