Imo: Widow Forced To Drink Water Used In Bathing Husband’s Corpse Rescued by OLAADEGBU(op): 8:08pm On Oct 27, 2025
A widow identified as Mrs. Chika Ndubuisi, from her husband’s kinsmen in Awo-Omamma, Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State, who was allegedly forced to drink water used in bathing her late husband’s corpse in a bid to prove her innocence over his death, has been rescued by the state government.

According to reports, the incident drew the attention of the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare after a women’s advocacy group raised the alarm exposing the cruel act.

Reacting to the development, the Imo state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu, strongly condemned the action, describing it as “an inhuman widowhood practice that has become outdated.”

Ugwu expressed shock that such a practice could still exist in modern times, lamenting that “a widow who is already undergoing the trauma of losing her husband would be coerced by her late husband’s kinsmen to partake in a ritual involving drinking from the water used in bathing his corpse.”

The commissioner described the act as “barbaric, cruel, and completely unacceptable in a civilised society.”

Also reacting to the incident, the wife of the state governor, Chioma Uzodinma, ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the incident to ensure that those involved face the full weight of the law.

According to the Commissioner, the widow had been detained alongside her husband’s corpse by his relatives, who accused her of being responsible for his death.

Her husband’s family allegedly attempted to force her to drink the water to prove her innocence before government officials intervened.

“The swift intervention of the Ministry, in collaboration with the Local Council Authority and security agencies, halted the attempt following the alert raised by the women’s group,” Ugwu stated, according to Daily Post.

She further explained that the ministry’s coordinated response, involving the chairman of the local council and some non-governmental organisations, led to the rescue of Mrs. Ndubuisi and her children.

“Normalcy has been restored, and a detailed investigation is underway. Mrs. Ndubuisi and her children are under government protection,” the Commissioner confirmed, adding that several arrests had been made in connection with the incident. [

As in, drink the contaminated water of an adult human corpse that is full of putrefying bacteria, ammonia, maggots and fecal matter vestiges shocked

This is more than an Imo State Ministry of Women Affairs rescue mission, the Police and NHRC must be involved to prosecute all those involved and help rehabilitate the poor widow.

When you hear the Yoruba proverb that marrying a horrible wife is not as terrible as having horrible in-laws, this is it. In-laws from hell!
May love and marriage not take you into such families and communities with such cultural practices.

This is what happens when you marry into a family where you are hated. People who practice this should know that the world has advanced beyond this. They'll be dealt with ruthlessly.

Are you people still clung to the stone age?
No wonder their females are swarming all over SW guys like bees.
Freedom and females live in harmony in the SW.
Yorubas are highly educated people, they don't mess with their freedom and sanctity.

Re: Imo: Widow Forced To Drink Water Used In Bathing Husband’s Corpse Rescued by Mynd44(mod): 5:08am On Oct 28, 2025
But if the wife dies, the husband doesn't brink the bath water. The husband can even invite his side chick to the funeral and after some weeks he can marry her because he "needs someone to help with the children"

Sebi some days we were arguing there is no Patriachy…..when we ignore important things and chase minor nonsense, it leaves our bum exposed to the public

If you have never drank another person bath water in a lifetime, why now when he is dead? How can one drink fluid off a body draped in phenol and Formaldehyde (chemicals used by mortician)

This is unacceptable and evil

And so? What's bad is bad irrespective of where it happened. I condemn that fully, and the people that did that in Awommamma should be ashamed of themselves. By the way, didn't you read that it was the women's group of that area that reported the matter? And it was Imo state's government that rescued the women not some SW state. Igbos don't support evil...as societal anomalies are exposed, they are tackled by the powers that be. . That's the way Igbos roll, unlike some regions that immortalized evil and evil people grin

Why can't they modernize the culture? Like mixing the dead body water with Ribena or Lucozade to make it more attractive. We have to preserve our culture.
