7 Red Flags When Shopping Online In Nigeria by Onetechnews(op): 5:06pm On Oct 08, 2025
When we say something is a red flag, it simply means something doesn’t sit right; it gives that uneasy feeling in your chest that says, “Something is off here.” And if you’ve ever been a victim of those tricky online vendors, you already know the kind of heartbreak that comes from ordering something beautiful online and receiving something that looks like it came straight out of a nightmare. That moment of “What I ordered vs What I got” can drain your trust in online shopping.

Let’s face it, online shopping in Nigeria can be both a blessing and a curse. One moment, you’re scrolling through a page filled with beautiful dresses, sneakers, gadgets, or wigs, and the next, you’re regretting why you didn’t just go to the market yourself. To save you from another round of disappointment, here are 7 red flags you should never ignore when shopping online in Nigeria.

1. No Clear Business Page or Website

If a vendor can’t point you to a proper page, website, or at least a verified business profile, that’s already a huge red flag. Many fake vendors hide behind random usernames and use only WhatsApp for sales. Once they collect your money, they disappear into thin air. Always check for a real page with posts, reviews, and consistency before paying.

2. Prices That Look Too Good to Be True

If you see an iPhone 14 going for ₦200,000 or a human hair wig that’s priced like synthetic, just pause. Don’t be carried away by cheap prices — they’re often bait to trap buyers. Real products have real prices. It’s better to pay more for quality than to cry later over rubbish delivered to your doorstep.

3. No Reviews or Only Perfect Reviews

When you check a page and all the reviews sound too polished or look copied, that’s a sign. Real businesses have both good and not-so-good feedback — because nobody can please everyone. If you don’t see any customer feedback, videos, or tagged posts from real people, think twice.

4. Payment Before Delivery with No Option for Pickup

Some vendors will tell you to pay in full before delivery, and once you do, boom — they vanish. If a business insists you must pay before even seeing the product and has no physical pickup option or verified delivery method, don’t send that money. It’s safer to buy from vendors that allow payment on delivery or offer clear proof of legitimacy.

5. Poor Communication or Rude Attitude

A genuine vendor understands that good customer service builds trust. But once a seller starts replying with “Are you buying or not?” or “I don’t have time for plenty questions,” that’s a red flag. If they are rude before you even buy, imagine how they’ll act after you’ve paid and something goes wrong.

6. Stolen or Misleading Pictures

Some online sellers use pictures they downloaded from Pinterest or international websites to attract buyers. You’ll see a product that looks so classy online, but when it arrives, you’ll just sigh. Before you order, ask for real pictures or short videos of the product, not screenshots from the internet.

7. No Return or Refund Policy

Once a vendor tells you, “We don’t accept returns,” or “Once you pay, no refund,” it’s time to run. A legitimate business should be open to returns if the item delivered differs from what you ordered. Don’t let anyone guilt-trip you into buying something that might frustrate you later.

8. Not Seeing the Face of the Vendor

If you want to purchase any goods online and the vendor refuses to do a video call with you, so you can confirm their identity. Abeg run oo. A real vendor will always want to reveal their faces as proof that they are not scammers.

Final Thoughts

Shopping online in Nigeria doesn’t have to be a nightmare. There are genuine vendors out there who truly care about their customers and deliver exactly what you order, sometimes even better. But the internet is also filled with tricksters who are only after your money.

So next time you want to click “send money,” take a few minutes to check those details, read reviews, and trust your gut. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t ignore it. Because in this online shopping game, once your money enters, the story go enter too. What is your online shopping story.

I can't be that too lazy to go to mall, super market and shop in Nigeria. Not every day things. The experience really dey make sense.

I don't even use credit card. It's over 5 years my card expired . I now mastered cashless policy. I have only touched cash not more than 3 times in this year so far. Easy payment with mobile money

Spending cash, you will loose reasonable amount of money in no change excuse

When shopping online, Common Sense is usually enough to avoid being scammed.

Those who get scammed, lack common sense.

Anybody shopping online in Nigeria is simply setting themselves up to be scammed.

I would only do that if those people from Biafra have gotten their Utopian Republic.

If I want to buy anything, I will simply carry my legs waka enter any store where whatever I need is being sold. I no get time & energy for avoidable drama.

Please if you have patronized Temu before, kindly give an honest review about them. I want to order a power station to power basic room appliances from them, their prices look to good to be true. Please kindly share the way to go about it here.

Even with a business page or a verified address, they will still defraud whoeverthey want to defraud.

Nigerians have already built for themselves a very bad corporate image in respect to business.

Was scammed on Facebook with roasted guinea fowl. Paid for two and vendor disappeared

Also, vintage shirts, vendor went off and even insulted me on phone.

Read their description carefully and check the dimensions so that u wont be buying cardboard instead....I buy from there often. Just have the knowledge of what u want and read carefully so u won't buy cover instead of what u need.

Re: 7 Red Flags When Shopping Online In Nigeria by ARISHEM:
I have gotten my fingers bitten purchasing computer gadgets in Jumia and there were no red flags anywhere. The first was portable 32TB SSD Hard drive. Purchased it 2 years ago and stored all my computer files in it. No problem after opening my files. 2 weeks later when I inserted the Ssd to my computer to extract few things out of it. All files stored inside Ssd got deleted
I couldn’t get my money back because products purchased were only given one week return.
A year later Amazon reviews later said those products were fake and fraud. That it wasn’t 32TB hard drive. But just 1 GB memory card designed into plastic to look genuine.

The second was HP laptop that was written boldly that has 12 month warranty. Laptop was good but 2 weeks later the charger got spoilt. I later learnt that it was a fake cheap charger that was packaged together. Took the laptop to hickley and they told me that laptop purchased in jumia does not have warranty because it’s US made.

Jumia have been so true to me for over 8 years now and I don't av any reason to doubt their credibility. Almost everything that I av ordered from were topnotch, I'm not saying there are no bad marketers on the portal buh strict diligent just as the poster have stated, u av to be very careful wen dealing on jumia
Re: 7 Red Flags When Shopping Online In Nigeria by Kelklein(m): 9:16am On Oct 29, 2025
If it's not a trusted and famous source or you personally know their location and store, don't pay and wait for delivery. Once you ask me to pay you anything before you deliver

Those that trust what they are selling would gladly do Pay On Delivery and sell very well. Understandably some Nigerians are notorious for wasting vendors' time and waybill only to cancel the order at the end.

1. Read every of the description carefully, as in very very carefully with the dimension.
2. Even when you observe the first point above, ensure you have enough shock absorber for disappointment. The quality may be far from your expectations
3. Do not fall for their promotions, you'll pay more to unlock the supposed gift.

This is my experience, yours may be different.

Not defending the scammers but I've been opportune to hear from real vendors that the reason for payment before delivery is because when items get to some customers they either stop communications or they reject the item, leaving vendor at loss as the vendor would pay the dispatch rider for his service
