The golden era of British comedy. I had no idea she was a lot older than John Cleese. I grew thinking since they were an onscreen couple, they were in the same age group.

It was the same with Esther Rolle (The mother- Florida Evans) who was 19 years older than John Amos (The father-James) in Good Times. He was 34 while she was 53 when the show started.

Isabelle Sanford was 21 years older than her on screen husband (Sherman Hemsley) in The Jeffersons.
She was 57 and he was 36 when the series began.

The show was notorious for stereotypes.

It was common at the time the show aired for hotels in Britain to employ foreigners who could not communicate effectively in English language.

Manuel (the Spanish waiter) represented these foreign workers in the series.

In airing the show in Spain and France, Manuel's nationality is Mexican, to make the stereotype less offensive to Europeans.

Basil took digs at Germans and the Old Major at Indians.

This is news to me. Women have always aged earlier than men because they mature earlier.

Modern day cosmetic procedures these entertainers indulge in is probably playing a role in giving an illusion of eternal youth

Men in that era aged much faster..
There's a picture of a 17yr old guy that enlisted in WW1. He had so much mustache and sideburns..i thought he was in his mid 30s.
It's now that men have been sissified.

Lol.....Sybil Sybil Sybil. ...I can still hear Basil calling that name. I remember the slaps she used to give him them. Factory resetting slaps.
The good old days. Take me back to those days. We had less gadgets but we were more happier than today where we have everything but not real genuine happiness.
