SAD IRONY OF FATE...

Alleged Coup: In October 1983, Major Daniel Idowu Bamidele heard of coup rumours against President Shehu Shagari and promptly reported to his General Officer Commanding (GOC), Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (who, unknown to Bamidele at that time, was in the thick of the plot).

A week later, Bamidele found himself on a plane to Lagos, detained by the Directorate of Military Intelligence at Tego Barracks and was accused of plotting a coup against Shagari.

Fake witnesses were paraded and a mock interrogation contrived, while reports were being made to the Nigerian Security Organisation (then under Umaru Shinkafi) to mislead the Shagari regime.

Meanwhile, the real plot continued underground with the full involvement of the same Military Intelligence group that was interrogating him.

Finally, on November 25, 1983, with no credible witness to nail him, and no legal basis to charge him for a one-man conspiracy, Bamidele was released. He returned to Jos, befuddled about what had actually transpired, until on January 1, 1984, his own GOC, Buhari, to whom he had reported the plot, emerged as the new Head of State!

Learning from his ordeal in 1983, Bamidele had kept quiet about any coups.

However, in 1985, the Major was arrested (for failing to report the alleged Vatsa coup conspiracy), tried by a special military tribunal, and executed by firing squad on March 5, 1986, along with others such as Major-General Mamman Vatsa.

Bamidele's words to the tribunal were:

"I heard of the 1983 coup planning, told my GOC General Buhari who detained me for two weeks in Lagos. Instead of a pat on the back, I received a stab. How then do you expect me to report this one?

"This is not self-adulation but a sincere summary of the qualities inherent in me. It is an irony of fate that the president of the tribunal who, in 1964, felt that I was good enough to take training in the UK is now saddled with the duty of showing me the exit from the force and the world."

Hmmm...this is deep. Fellow Nairalanders, what did you just learn from this?

This is a typical example of "May Nigeria never happen to us". Sadly, Nigeria happened to this brilliant General. Whistle blowing gone wrong. May his loyal soul rest in peace cry

The very same Buhari and Northern leaders did this to a Yoruba man but you won't see them hating on the north or accusing them of evil against Yorubas, they even supported the same Buhari to become president twice.

Now imagine if all the leaders who did this to this Yoruba man were Igbos, you will still be seeing articles till date how the Igbos h8 Yorubas...

It is well..

You think Tinubu and the southwest politically queued behind Buhari out of passion and conviction when it was clearly out of power exigencies of 2023? Take a look at what is happening now, how parochial Tinubu is now in his policies, and then you realise he never loved Buhari or the north for once but only pretended to.

So are you saying the love the Yorubas are showing to the north is just for political gains?

Absolutely. Prior to 2013, Buhari was the most loathed politician in the southwest. Even more loathed than Jonathan. Even Obj was isolated by his own people in the southwest because they considered his presidency a product of the northern power brokers. In that case, what changed in 2014 as regards Buhari? Tinubu only envisioned Buhari as the prime ticket to his presidency in 2023.

So you are saying Yorubas just wanted a Yoruba supremacist president at any cost?

Definitely not all yorubas. Certainly there are those who are on principle opposed to the present day govts policies and clannishness. But a good number of the "Tinubuists" knew what they wanted from the word go. They are happily living that dream.

I know it is not all Yorubas but a large number, this is one major reason why I gave up on the unity of Nigeria, I used to be a strong advocate of one Nigeria, not anymore...

The problem is that we do not have patriotic leaders who can put the nation first. A succession of leaders are only interested I selfishly pursuing an ethnic agenda against a nationalist one. I don't blame those who've lost faith in the country anymore.

Some of people will do Christmas in Kuje and Kirikiri respectively. Nowadays, you just have to be careful about what you post or share on social media. You can easily be traced and prosecuted. Whatever you post online can now be used against you.
