Sanusi Faults FG For Borrowing After Subsidy Removal

Former CBN governor and 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has criticised the federal government for continued borrowing despite removing fuel subsidy.

Speaking at the Oxford Global Think Tank Leadership Conference in Abuja, Sanusi said the subsidy removal had already increased revenue and questioned why the Bola Tinubu administration was still taking loans.

He praised the removal of fuel subsidy and exchange rate unification as “painful but necessary,” but warned that reckless spending could erase the gains.

“If you stop paying subsidies but continue borrowing, it means you’ve filled one hole only to dig another,” he said. Sanusi blamed the nation’s economic woes on years of poor fiscal management and populist policies.

He urged the government to cut waste, asking, “Why do we need 48 ministers and long convoys?” He also condemned the culture of praise-singing in governance, noting that sycophancy prevents leaders from hearing the truth.

According to him, leaders must seek honest advisers rather than those who flatter them.

Come to think of it, does it make sense to be borrowing loans when you said you have removed subsidy. What then is the money realized from subsidy remover used for if not only to be looted.

Has subsidy been removed ? NNPC needs to come out clear on this ....as long as Nigeria is importing petrol to counter Dangote then subsidy must be at play somewhere
Re: Sanusi Faults FG For Borrowing After Subsidy Removal by nairalanda1(m): 1:08pm On Oct 29, 2025
Yeah borrowing happens because most of our government revenue comes from oil.

And our fiscal break even is 156 dollars per barrel. Our budget was also based on oil being at 75 dollars per barrel, and even then , government wanted to borrow 13 trillion

Oil this year has averaged at 63-68 dollars.

That means deficit and that means borrowing or else.

Tinubu not doing anything about diversification and also improving tax incomes and still paying subsides on power which weakens our manufacturing base worsens matters

There is no subsidy. If there was, imported fuel would be retailing at 400 naira or less. And there would be massive scarcity and dangote refinery would become scrap

And debt would be eating 130% of our revenue.

So subsidy is uncountable money that will make Nigeria not borrow again, abi?
USA,China,UK etc that are much more richer are borrowing.
How much money are you making in oil sales et al that you think you are richer than even South Africa that has borrowed 5 times more than Nigeria with around $600 billion.
Your budget oil sales projection is $75 bpd but oil is around $63,how do you make up other than borrow.
Nigeria's debt is not even up to $150 billion.

same people looting that subsidy money are the one praying that our refinery don't work.. Even with subsidy fuel should not be above #300. By December fuel may sell #1000 liter.

Tinubu brazenly boasted that fuel subsidy is gone but the savings can't be substantiated as chronic borrowing continues with the attendant economic complications despite talks of attaining sufficient revenue generation. Who is fooling who?

Cost of making a liter of fuel is 700-800 naira per liter.

If fuel was sold at 300 naira that's a massive loss. Our domestic refineries won't be able to earn enough cash for their upkeep

That kind of attitude is how we lost four NNPC refineries. Government was over the years cutting corners to keep subsidy costs low. By 2012 they were damaged beyond repair

Because vat revenue ain't enough to fill the deficit that is resulting from oil prices being below the budget baseline.

Governments borrow money to cover budget shortfalls, fund large-scale infrastructure projects, and stimulate the economy, as their tax revenue often doesn't cover total expenses.

Borrowing provides an alternative to solely relying on taxes, which can be limited or politically difficult to raise, u know better Captain Noah.

Because of devaluation Tinubu govt is earning 3 times less than former govts so he has to borrow additional dollars

Fuel subsidy removal is a massive scam
It is a devilish policy to impoverish Nigerians and enrich the political class
It is the sole reason for the convergence of the political class around a common political front while the masses are left to grapple with a cost of living crisis which is making them live like peasants
All the phantom promises of development is a smokescreen

At the end, it's not worth your time discussing with them. All they do is use intemperate language.

Well, Dale Carnegie had good advice for such people. Ignore them.

There are some entities like one nairalanda1 who still believe till today that prices still need to be radically increased across board, that Nigerians are lazy and simply want free things and complain too much.

And the children of God shall say unto to him . . . . F*** D*** AND D**!
No pls I don't subscribe to such wishes. I may disagree with someone on grounds of principles and perspective but I do not ever wish anyone lose their soul because of their beliefs no matter how warped

More importantly, it has since emerged that the fellow in question is just hustling for his hot, creamy agbadeau like other folks like Manna who hustled for his fura before him. So why will i begrudge a man his hustle for his daily loaf no matter how morally repugnant?

Far be it from me!
