Tanzania: Samia Suluhu Runs in an Election with Almost No Opposition

President Samia Suluhu Hassan is running today in a presidential election largely stripped of any serious competition, following a broad political and judicial campaign that has seen key opposition figures disqualified, arrested, or prosecuted.

According to media reports and human rights organizations, authorities have intensified measures aimed at silencing dissent: bans on public gatherings, media restrictions, arrests of opposition leaders, and court injunctions against major parties : a situation described by Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International as an “escalation of repression” on the eve of the vote.

International sources and news agencies report that access to some communication platforms has been restricted and that protests have been banned, further limiting the ability of opposition groups to organize and inform the public. Opposition members also claim that legal proceedings (in some cases for serious charges such as “treason”) have been launched against prominent leaders, depriving the country of a truly pluralistic electoral debate.
