Lawmakers Ordered Arrest Of JAMB Officials Who Staged Walkout by dre11(op): 5:17am On Oct 30, 2025
There was uproar in the House of Representatives on Wednesday as aggrieved lawmakers ordered the arrest of officials of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) following a dramatic walkout during a committee session.

The incident occurred when representatives of JAMB appeared before the House Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies for an investigative hearing.

Tension began after the Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, failed to appear in person and delegated a Director, Mufutau Bello, to represent him.

During the meeting, Bello reportedly requested that journalists leave the room, citing the “sensitive nature” of documents to be presented.

The request was rejected by members of the Committee, who maintained that the House had constitutional powers to conduct open proceedings and determine the mode of its sittings.

A heated exchange ensued, during which Bello, visibly upset, directed his team to leave the session — an action that infuriated the lawmakers.

Angered by what they described as “disrespect to the Parliament,” the Committee raised the matter at plenary, prompting calls for disciplinary action against the JAMB officials.

The House consequently directed the Sergeant-at-Arms to arrest the officials who had already left the National Assembly complex before the order could be executed.

Chairman of the committee, Obuku Oforji, condemned the action of the JAMB, describing it as unacceptable.

“We wrote three consecutive letters to the registrar requesting these documents; instead of appearing, he sent a director who accused us of trying to embarrass JAMB. That is very unfortunate,”

“Our duty is to ensure every agency under our watch is accountable to Nigerians,” he said.

Lawmakers further resolved that JAMB’s Registrar must appear before the Committee in person on Tuesday next week, alongside his management team, to present all requested documents.

They warned that failure to comply could compel the House to issue a warrant of arrest against the Registrar.

Briefing journalists after the incident, a member of the committee, Awaji-Inombek Abiante, said legislators would not tolerate unaccountability.

“If JAMB can walk out on a national assembly committee, it means they no longer see themselves as accountable to Nigerians. Oversight is not a favour; it’s a constitutional duty.

“We’ve heard stories where snakes swallowed money. Maybe this time, a bigger creature has done the swallowing,”
he said.

The JAMB people expressed their fundamental human right to freedom.

You can't arrest someone for expressing his right to freedom. Had the lawmakers arrested them, the JAMB guys would have sued the lawmakers

What jamb director and his team did was a slap on all Nigerians..National Assembly belongs to Nigerians and whoever is elected to represent his people is holding it on trust for the people..if only our lawmakers understand it ,no body will disrespect them not even the president...but then when majority of lawmakers are jokers ,such embarrassment will keep happening....

I am not sure that you read the report. Smh.

That you're a lawmaker doesn’t automatically grant you security access to sensitive information let alone to the media without appropriate clearance.

Las las, JAMB will still not release the sensitive information to the media but will release it exclusively to only those members of the committee. If the sensitive information gets to the media, it is the members of the committee that will be held by D.S.S.

They think that they can intimidate the man and make him forget that he's there to represent the executive arm of government.

Now I understand why JAMB Registrar sent such an experienced Senior Officer to represent him.

Which kind of rookie legislator is this for God's sake. Just clear the media for such period requested and call the media back afterwards! It's serious business and not content creation for the media.

That legislator, Mr Obuku Oforji, must be reported for appropriate investigation and sanctioning if he breached the rights of those FG officials and intentionally wanted to embarrass JAMB.

On the suggestion for the arrest of the Federal Government officials, that's preposterous. The Parliament belongs to every Nigerian and remains the sanctuary for the exercise of every citizen's dignity and lawful freedom in a democracy, including members of the Executive and Judiciary.

The Parliament doesn't belong to Mr Obuku Oforji et al alone. We can call for his own arrest too!

A lot of comments up there already shows the government is not really the problem of the people, the people are their own problem.

That is always bound to happen. You collect bribes from these organizations instead of supervising them. You collect bribes to confirm the installation of their bosses.

Even JAMB knows this sitting is all for show and it's bribes that will end it. So they can as well skip all the show and give you your bribe when you're ready. You asked for it.

angry

How sensitive was to documents that meant to be kept away from the public eyes?

So much fraud from JAMB and universities admission officers on admission racketeering federal University in South-south (treasure base) are selling admission into top departments to highest bidders not on merit and JAMB is aware of it.

I have my evidence
