Tinubu Approves 15% Import Duty Tax On Petrol, Diesel by politicoNG(op): 9:09am On Oct 30, 2025
President Bola Tinubu has approved a 15 percent ad-valorem import duty on diesel and premium motor spirit (PMS), also known as petrol.

In a letter dated October 21, 2025, seen by TheCable, Damilotun Aderemi, the private secretary to the president, conveyed Tinubu’s approval to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

Tinubu gave the approval after a request by FIRS to apply the 15 percent duty on the cost, insurance and freight (CIF) to align import costs to domestic realities.

According to the letter, the implementation of the import duty will increase a litre of petrol by an estimated N99.72 kobo.

All the money being borrowed, where are they?

All this problem is because of sharing money to states and local governments every month.

Lets allow states to generate their taxes itself and take care of themselves.
People who always wait for money are usually lazy.

Your budget this year was based on the plan that oil prices will be 75 dollars per barrel

Since January ending, oil has been averaging 68 dollars per barrel

At the end, it's either loans or taxes or things don't get paid

And yes, apc took over promising diversification. They failed.

Modified

We got to fight corruption, but the major issue in which apc has messed up is lack of diversification and eventually industrial economy

I don't support any of your parties by the way

President Tinubu is surely taking Nigerians for granted. His only saving grace will be a low voter turnout in 2027.

While this is commendable to encourage local production, yet our local production capacity is not enough to meet the daily demand.

What may happen is that importers may sell at a higher price and local producers will instead of selling lower match that price.

Not particularly. If fuel is abundant in Nigeria, why would we need to import?

Does it sound right that we have oil but no refinery?

I trust middle men and retailers to sell at imported rate despite buying from Dangote. This is to discourage marketers from importing as allowed in the petroleum industry act📌💯🤷🏿

Even the Bible revealed it: Woe to Nigerians for the devil has come down to you.

He's in Nigeria.

He came, stole it, snatched it, and ran away with it.

Increasing import tariff on essential product like petrol will adversely affect the economy of Nigeria and further drive people into poverty.

President Tinubu why?.. who are those advising you for crying out loud.
Just packing novice to fill space in Government is really telling on the country, policy somersault here and there.

Whether we accept or not, Nigeria is not a one man show.. Nigerians still hold the power to hire and fire those who lead them through elections.

We didn't vote so Nigerians could get strangled to death from bad policies.
