Experts Urge CBN to Issue Higher Naira Denominations of N10,000 and N20,000

An economic review has advised the Central Bank of Nigeria to issue higher-denomination naira notes such as N10,000 and N20,000 to restore the currency’s portability and ease the rising cost of cash transactions.

The report observed that the naira’s persistent depreciation has rendered the N1,000 note—Nigeria’s highest denomination—almost valueless in real purchasing terms.

It noted that while a N1,000 note was worth about $7 in 2005, it now equals less than 60 cents, reflecting a 94% loss in value over two decades. Analysts argued that higher-value notes would not worsen inflation, as price increases are driven by production and demand factors, not currency denomination.

They explained that many countries issue higher-value bills to maintain convenience after major currency depreciation, not to trigger inflation.

The review highlighted that everyday transactions, especially in the informal sector, have become cumbersome as traders and rural dwellers must carry large amounts of cash for simple purchases.

It also stressed that the cost of printing, moving, and securing existing lower-value notes has become excessively high for the apex bank.

Introducing N10,000 and N20,000 notes—or undertaking a currency redenomination—was described as a practical step to enhance transaction efficiency, cut operational expenses, and align Nigeria’s currency system with global standards.

The analysts maintained that this proposal does not mean printing more money but simply modernising the naira to match present economic realities and the steep decline in its purchasing power.

Experts in what?
Stupidity and buffoonery?
Do they know anything about Macroeconomics?

If the CBN implements the NONSENSE, we'll leave the realms of Galloping inflation for the stratosphere of SUPERSONIC inflation.

We'd be using a Wheelbarrow-load of money to buy SNIPER while looking to the sweet release of death with FONDESS.

"Experts" should STOP this nonsense and go back to their Beer Parlour.

Re: Experts Urge CBN To Issue Higher Naira Denominations Of N10,000 And N20,000 by fineboynl(m):
It’s long overdue. I would suggest 5000 and 10000 for a start. After a years or 2 we can add 20000.

More of 5k then fewer 10k. and make 20k very scares to see.

When obj introduce 1000 the value today would be like 30-40k. People shouted then. Because it almost amounts to 10$ at the time. Considering dollars also devalued too.

If you give anyone 1k then they will look it in the sun or through touch light just to tell you of it value as at then. But not anymore today.

The only alternative is to redenominate the naira by removing 2 zero or bring higher denomination. If you withdrew 100k in the market. You can’t even use it to buy anything tangible which shouldn’t be.

In fact it should have been done last year.

Higher denomination doesn’t translate to more money in circulation. It only means money in circulation is compressed and scares to see around.

In response to people saying it will cause inflation like zimbabwe
it’s not what caused the inflation there. They face inflation by western sanctions. Same sanctions with Venezuela. Ghana face inflation too and they add 10k notes then. Inflation is why they print higher denomination because it pointless to print valueless currency like we are doing today. They print higher denomination to counter the inflation. Not the higher denomination that cause the inflation. If 20 billion is in circulation and you mob it up with higher denomination with the same 20billion it won’t cause inflation. Alternative is to remove some zero from the currency.

Obj add the option to remove some zero but the senate rejected it. So they introduced higher denomination.

If this advice is followed,it will put the final nail on the Nigeria coffin. This is handiwork of enemies of Nigeria.

The only thing holding up this country now is the crude oil export, because no working refinery to refine it.
which is tied to the dollar, despite that, the county's currency is still at an all time low.

Nigeria is an import dependent nation,so all her money is spent on import and less on exports

This results to trade deficit, year in year out, hence the continuous borrowing to run the economy including padding the naira

They should do it at least 5000 and 10000 naira note just as CFA because the 1000 naira note now is as useless as 'P' in psychology.

Who are these faceless yeye experts? Govt wants to go cashless so they can track your income as per new tax laws incoming as well as formalize and capture the black market economy, track illegal money flows and corruption. Some so called expert is suggesting ways to make it easier to evade taxes, aide corruption and keep the shadow economy in the shadows.

Who are these experts? From which school? We need to know so we can blacklistvtheir graduates!

I have made this suggestion sometimes ago. You don't even need to be a financial expert to know this.

Due to the reduction in the purchasing power and the hyper-inflation in the country, the need for the CBN to issue higher denomination notes is sacrosanct. Abi, until when we start using a bundle of N1000 note to purchase a cube of Maggi, bah?
Re: Experts Urge CBN To Issue Higher Naira Denominations Of N10,000 And N20,000 by Almunjid:
To tackle inflation and naira devaluation, Nigeria could follow Ghana's lead and redenominate the naira. By removing a zero from current denominations, resulting in new notes like N1 (formerly N10), N2, N5, N10, N20, N50, N100, N500, and N1,000 (instead of N10,000 note). This simplifies transactions and aligns with Ghana's successful cedi redenomination. grin

Peace!
