Tourism Thursday: I Finally Got Verified on Upwork! 🎉 – Who here is more experienced on Upwork?

Nairaland and my website had been giving me all the clients I needed, so much that I got a bit too comfortable and lazied up with my Upwork verification 😅

I actually opened my Upwork account last year but didn’t focus on verifying it until recently.
Well, guess what? I finally submitted my ID yesterday, and boom! I’m now officially verified on Upwork!

I couldn’t wait to share the good news with my husband who was out. 🥰

I’ve heard that Upwork pays really well, so I’m curious, who here is more experienced on Upwork?
Please share your experiences, tips, or advice. I’d love to learn from you!

I can proudly say I’ve been working from home for three years now and it’s been such a blessing knowing I can pay my bills without waiting for a monthly salary.

By the way, it was my husband who introduced me to the world of remote work, and I’m so glad I took that leap of faith and quit my low-income job to focus on my skills. Today, I can confidently say I’ve grown so much and I know my next big deal is just around the corner. 🤝

Your profile picture is too playful.

Change your hourly to ten dollars, even if you will Cl
charge five so as not to be seen as absolute bottom barrel freelancer.

Really, Okay.
Here I was thinking lesser fees attracts more clients.

What ID did be you used to verify your account? NIN, Passport, Voter's card which one?

Pro tip

1. You need to buy connect and apply strategically

2. Apply to jobs early especially those with less than 5 proposal to get your proposal seen easily.

3. Make sure you provide extreme value in your proposal.

4. Optimized your profile too to get invites

That screenshot you uploaded doesn’t show that your profile is verified.

As a newbie on Upwork, my honest advice is to start with cheaper gigs, preferably between $10–$50. Those are the jobs you realistically stand a chance of landing at this stage. Most high paying gigs require experience, even if clients don’t state it outright. Trust me, when it comes down to choosing, many clients will pick someone with a Top Rated or Top Rated Plus badge over a new freelancer with no reviews.

For now, your main goal should be profile building, not big money. Focus on landing small jobs, delivering excellent work, and getting 5-star ratings and solid reviews. That’s what speeds up the process of earning a badge, which in turn opens the door to higher-paying jobs.

I’d also recommend subscribing to Freelancer Plus instead of buying connects. It costs $20 per month, but you get 50% off on your first month, so you’ll pay just $10. With Freelancer Plus, you get 100 free connects, plus the about 50 welcome connects Upwork gives new users. That’s roughly about 150 connects in total.

Another advantage is that Freelancer Plus gives you daily alerts on newly posted jobs, so you can apply to listings within seconds of them going live. That alone increases your chances significantly.

When applying for jobs, try to focus on clients from the US, Canada, Australia, and Europe. You can skip most listings from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Philippines, especially as a beginner cos clients from those countries hardly give good reviews. And as a new freelancer, this wouldn't be good for you.

Lastly, always check that the client has a verified payment method and a hire rate of at least 70%. Anything lower, and you risk wasting your connects on clients who aren’t serious about hiring.

Good luck.

Alright, thanks.

Here's the evidence you needed.

No, I’m not doubting you at all. I was just pointing out that the verification badge hasn’t reflected on your profile yet. Maybe it will update later.

Also, I forgot to add this in my previous post. You'll need to create a portfolio on your profile, and upload samples of jobs you’ve done in the past. From the screenshot you shared, you haven’t published anything yet.

Since you create AI cartoon videos, clients will definitely want to see proof of your work before taking you seriously. One good idea is to open a YouTube channel, upload some of your videos there, and then add the channel link to your Upwork portfolio.

You should also create a one-minute introduction video on your profile. In the video, go straight to the point and clearly explain the tools you use and the kind of results you can deliver for clients. There’s no need for long introductions.

Upwork is brutal and heavily saturated. If you want to stand out, especially as a new freelancer, you have to be unique.
