Tinubu's Support Helped Air Peace Crash Fare From $13,000 To $3,000 – Onyema by Pakute(op): 8:05pm On Oct 30, 2025
The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace Limited, Allen Onyema, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for providing the policy support that made possible the airline’s historic Abuja–London Heathrow flight.

He said the president’s intervention helped slash international airfares from as high as $13,000 to about $3,000.

Speaking in an interview on ARISE News on Wednesday, Onyema described the milestone as a turning point for Nigeria’s aviation sector and a proof of what effective collaboration between government and private enterprise can achieve.

“I want to congratulate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for pulling this off. This is an example of government paving the way for the private sector to thrive.

“No country develops without the private sector, because it is the private sector that embodies and implements the visions and aspirations of government.”

“President Tinubu did the right thing for this country. His intervention forced foreign airlines to reduce their ticket prices drastically. Prices have come down from $13,000 from Abuja to Heathrow; we’ve brought it down to $3,000,” Onyema said.

His comments came after Air Peace Limited on Sunday commenced a direct flight from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, to the London Heathrow Airport.

In a statement through his aide, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo , said,

“The flight took off this morning, Sunday, October 26, 2025, and is expected to arrive this evening in London, marking a major milestone for Nigeria’s aviation industry.”

Onyema said the flight has “saved Nigerians money and made flying affordable again. Even Britons on our flights were happy because competition has finally arrived.”

The Air Peace boss revealed that the airline now operates 14 weekly flights between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, covering both Lagos–London Gatwick and Abuja–London Heathrow routes, a first for any Nigerian carrier.

He said the entry into the lucrative UK route has forced foreign airlines to review their fares, benefiting all travellers.

“This is the first time any Nigerian airline will be flying both the Lagos–London Gatwick and Abuja–London Heathrow routes simultaneously.

“It’s opened the corridor not just to Europe but to the entire world. Many of our passengers are connecting to America, Canada and Asia through London, saving a lot of money with our affordable fares.”

“Even if you don’t fly Air Peace, you can now fly other airlines at reduced fares,” he added.

“Air Peace cannot fly everybody, but at least Nigerians now have a choice,” he said.

Onyema credited Keyamo for driving the president’s aviation vision, noting that under Tinubu’s administration, Nigerian airlines have regained access to international leasing options after more than 15 years of restrictions.

“I cannot stop praising Festus Keyamo. He is implementing the mandate and vision of Mr President 100 per cent. This is the first time airlines in Nigeria will have leasing options.

“For over 15 years, the industry was blacklisted, but this administration changed everything. They signed the Cape Town Convention Practice Direction that allows big leasing companies to come into Nigeria.

“The government has given Nigerian aviation a new lease of life,” he said.

Onyema also hailed the government’s removal of the 4% FOB levy on imported aircraft parts, saying such responsive policies have boosted investor confidence.

“We’re not asking for money — just supportive policies. When we complained about the levy, the president removed it immediately. That’s what a listening government does.”

Onyema, however, cautioned against bureaucratic hostility toward indigenous enterprises.

“Some people still suffer from a pull-him-down syndrome. Destroying a company like Air Peace that employs over 10,000 Nigerians harms the nation. When people lose jobs, insecurity rises."

He reaffirmed Air Peace’s commitment to projecting Nigeria’s image globally, stressing that the airline’s success belongs to the country, not just its founder.

“Air Peace is not about Allen Onyema — it’s about Nigeria. Every time we fly our flag in London, we show what Nigerians can achieve when government and the private sector work together,” he added.

PUNCH Online reported that Kayemo had said in June 2025 that the landmark flight follows sustained diplomatic efforts by the Federal Government to enforce reciprocity in international air travel agreements.

The minister said that the breakthrough was the result of a letter from the ministry dated Aug. 1, 2024, to the UK Secretary of State for Transport, Rt. Hon. Louise Haigh.

This is good to hear

However, unless you are talking about business class which ranges from $2000+ to about $5000. Economy should be between $500 to $1000.

They all however depends on when you buy your ticket.

Since it is you business you know better than me. It is important to be very clear in one's communication to the general public.

If you can't understand why Governors, lawmakers are decamping and tilting towards Mr President, have you asked yourself why industry players like Onyema, Dangote, Elumelu, Otedola and co are heaping praise on Mr President?. This is the first time we have a President who is giving private investors a sense of belonging and repositioning the sector for greater maximization. A president that is helping local investors acquire the offshore assets of international oil companies thereby expanding their horizons. The first time ever we are having first indigenous export terminal. How do I forget Authur Eze who is now the biggest Tinubu supporter in the Southeast, prior to 2023, he wasn't even a Tinubu fan.

Frankly speaking, the poor masses are the problems of themselves, you see the likes of Dangote, Onyema, BUA, trying to bring down the price of their products but each time prices of foods crashed a little, farmers would start to lament, they fight back every efforts of the Government to bring down food prices just for them to keep exploiting the masses and smiling to the bank.

Allen should have gone further to outline the so-called policies and interventions Tinubu initiated, for which he is being praised, instead of making blanket statements to curry favor.

I don't think any business man will bring down flight fare by that huge margin just because he loves you so much, if Government had not given much support. The FOB levy which has been eliminated, the interest free loans extended to the Airlines to help with the ease of operations, the several bottlenecks which the minister has removed in the last two years, helping him expand operations to London and Brazil. Go check his interviews before this Government came to power, see how he was lamenting from start to finish and then compare to his recent ones within this two years. You wouldn't know only if you're close minded and your thoughts conditioned in a certain way.

No way you travel at $13,000.
That's a lie.

If you have traveled abroad, you will know this.
It's just not possible.

Are you relocating permanently, is Air Peace handling vacations now.

I think the narrative is geared toward election.

Absolutely no one would pay $13, 000 for an Abuja to Heathrow flight. Even British Airways charges less than $1200. Ethiopian airlines is less than $1000. I sense you're just desperate to give Tinubu some encomiums but this one is layered in ridiculousness.

He was misreported

Ticket prices were as high as 5m in economy. You can get seats now for 1.4k direct and below 1k on extended flight times.

Still a remarkable drop in prices.

The ego of my boss? really?
If Tinubu is my Boss, then he is your boss as well.

If you have problem with Allen assertion, drag it with him. If you read the article, you will see that there are many other statements beside airfare that was stated in the article that is worth commending, unless you are one of those that don't want to hear or believe any good news from the government.

I do believe there is an obvious exaggeration in his statement. I also believe he is cheering the administration not because of party politics but because of good policy that benefits his business. When the previous administration policy was detrimental to his business sector, he was very loud about it. It is therefore good to hear positive change. It is good to hear we are no longer painting rented foreign airline plane but implementing policies that help indigenous airlines to the benefit of Nigerians.

The Airline boss, is a public figure, it is very wrong of him to be making this mistake publicly. If the owner of Aircraft could be making such mistake, what does he want staff to make?

guy they are praising the office, not the president. Tinubu is a nobody to them without that office he occupies. That's why you find these business men aligning with the president of the day from Obasanjo to Tinubu. You can not successfully run a large scale private business without substantial political support.

When reality hits you hard, you still want to listen to a Nigerian businessman in a country where business and politics are heavily intertwined?

Check the history of Arthur Ezeh. To him, every President since the time of IBB is next after Jesus Christ. His political party had always been whatever political party has the Presidency. He ate with IBB, gyrated with Abacha, danced with OBJ, licked the fingers of GEJ, wined with Buhari and today is kissing the ass of Tinubu. For the same reason every kleptomaniac politician wants to join APC for blanket immunity from prosecution. It is what it is. A former aide to Buhari lamented that those who praised him while in power turned their backs against him when he left Aso Rock.

It is foolhardy to let billionaires like Allen Onyema, Dangote, Otedola, etc tell us the condition of Nigeria.
