Guinea-Bissau Foils Alleged Coup Plot, Arrests Army Officers Including Military Court Ex-President

Guinea-Bissau’s military says it has foiled an alleged coup attempt aimed at disrupting the country’s forthcoming general elections.

In an official statement, the military declared that it had "successfully thwarted an attempt to 'subvert the constitutional order,'" confirming the detention of several senior army officers accused of plotting to derail the democratic process.

According to the statement, "the arrests took place on October 30, mere hours before the official start of campaigning for the legislative and presidential votes slated for November 23, 2025."

Among those arrested is Brigadier General Daba Nawalna, also known as Dahaba Na Walna, who serves as the director of the Cuméré Military Training Centre and is a former president of the Military High Court.

"He was apprehended at his residence in Bissau," authorities said, adding that investigations into the alleged plot are ongoing.

In August, the president of Guinea-Bissau sacked the West African country's prime minister and appointed his successor, the latest move to position President Umaro Sissoco Embalo for a likely second term in elections due in November.

According to African News, quoting a presidential decree, Rui Duarte de Barros, who served as prime minister since December 2023, was replaced by Braima Camara, a former coordinator of the Madem G15 opposition party.

The country has endured multiple coups since gaining independence from Portugal more than 50 years ago.

Guinea-Bissau’s constitution sets the presidential term at five years, with maximum two terms. The opposition says Embalo’s term should have ended on Feb. 27 but the nation's Supreme Court has ruled that it should run until Sept. 4.

However, Embalo earlier this year set the election date for November 30 and said that his first term will run until then, further heightening tensions.
