US official signals readiness for military action over alleged killings of Christians in Nigeria

A senior US official has signalled that Washington is preparing for military action if Nigeria fails to stop attacks on Christians, echoing a threat made by US President Donald Trump.

In a post on X on Sunday, the US defence secretary, Pete Hegseth, said the Department of War was preparing for action if the Nigerian Government did not protect Christians. The message followed a post by President Trump on his Truth Social platform in which he warned the United States would “prepare for possible action” and said he could halt all aid to Nigeria.

Mr Trump wrote that if the killings continued the US would “immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria” and that he had instructed the Pentagon to prepare for a possible operation. He described any attack as likely to be “fast, vicious, and sweet.”

The comments have provoked concern internationally and drawn a swift response from Nigerian officials. The presidency said it would engage with the US, and President Bola Tinubu was reported to be arranging talks to address the accusations. Nigerian ministers have rejected claims that the government allows targeted killings of Christians, saying security reports show victims from all faiths.

Analysts note that Nigeria faces multiple security challenges, including attacks by Islamist extremists and communal violence, and that victims have included Muslims as well as Christians. Observers warned that threats of unilateral military action by a foreign power risk inflaming tensions and complicating efforts to tackle the violence.

Washington and Abuja are expected to hold discussions in the coming days as both sides seek to clarify positions and avoid a further escalation.
