I often find it funny that anytime someone mentions tax, Nigerians start shouting and screaming Emefiele was appointed by GEJ and one thing he did was to bring back tarrifs for every ATM withdrawal. Even GEJ supporters were saying they miss the now Emir of Kano, who before they were abusing. You hear Nigerians shouting that they do subsidy in saner climes. When you inform them that such subsides are paid for by taxes, dem go dey begin to start wobbling and fumbling, or they start to call one agbero. ![]() If we were to bring subsidy back on fuel, government would spend 15 trillion naira. That is half of our budget for this year...and you know what that means...a big hole in the budget which would be filled by .....loans. Like I say here many times, even if we fight corruption and even if we assume that Obi eliminated corruption on taking over in 2023, it still means we have a budget of less than 32 trillion this year. That cannot pay for any subsides or freebies or welfare projects. That is why APC Is useless...they can't raise revenue. But Nigerians have been so used to freebies that when GEJ for example told them the truth in 2011, that fuel subsides were unsustainable, most of them went on riots and protests (today some of them chant they were decieved..lol). Nigerians want everything cheap. The fact is, there is no cheap anything Tarrifs on fuel are being charged because right now, our budget was based on oil being at least 75 dollars per barrel for the year. IN reality, oil has been at 63-68 dollars per year. In the past we would have borrowed our way out if it, and we are still borrowing, but IMF Is also refusing to give us the amount we actually need...so taxes. You can call me agbero, or you can face the reality of our poverty, and vote out APC in 2027 AND VOTE IN A GOVERNMENT WHOSE AGENDA WOULD BE INDUSTRIALIZATION AND IMPROVED PRODUCTIVITY...and who will stop wasting money on subsidising power so that we can have enough investment to actually fix power. Only education and health below the secondary level should and must be subsidised. |

PBAT should suspend any ugly policy that will lead to public uprising. Now that the eyes of U. S. is on Nigeria, masses will take advantage and make him more unpopular. |

nairalanda1:You never seem to question the spending. What can be done better, with lesser aka government efficiency. It is always only about Nigerians not paying enough. A man who runs a business and has little care for his clients.or customers beyond what he bills them is headed for bankruptcy. Where are the investments government wants to profit from. That is the question. Leaders or governments of other nations are up in arms with one another to bring investments and jobs back home because they know the limitations of a tax flog on a dying economy. Not this one that wants to make bricks without straw. They give you palliatives and want you to pay first world taxes out of that. When was the last time you heard this government mention the word EMPLOYMENT RATE. Such a vital, critical statistic in other climes. Here, no. |

As I already maintained, a tax of 15% is basically a import ban. As I mentioned earlier, I suspect Dangote must have convinced the government to impose the tariff in his quest to increase the capacity of the refinery from 650,000barrels per day to 1.4mbpd, making it the largest refinery in the world. This would also be the largest investment, either local or foreign, now, or even till 2031, when Tinubu hopes to leave office. It might have been too tempting to refuse. I do support some level of protectionism as I suspect the competition may be unfair, but a tariff that makes it a defacto monopoly is wrong. A tariff of 5% might be more acceptable. For some reason, I suspect these importers may be bringing in substandard petrol, or from questionsble sources.. The are prepared to do almost anything to stay in business, one they have been in for decades, and wonder why an upstart like Dangote, should drive them out of business. |

Reference:Consider that before spending or stealing, our budget is 30 trillion naira for 230 million people That's not enough even if it was spent without corruption. |
