15% Import Tariff: Femi Otedola Praises President Tinubu by AnonPoet(op): 6:28am On Nov 04, 2025
I commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his bold and decisive step in implementing a 15 per cent import tariff on petrol and diesel. This policy represents a crucial move towards safeguarding local industries that have made substantial investments in domestic production and refining capacity.

For decades, Nigeria’s industrial base has suffered from the unchecked importation of cheaper and often substandard goods, a practice that crippled once-thriving sectors such as textiles, local vehicle assembly, and manufacturing. We cannot afford to allow history to repeat itself within the energy sector, particularly now that Nigeria possesses the capacity to meet its petrol and diesel requirements locally.

This tariff not only protects the billions of dollars already invested in refining infrastructure but also underscores the government’s commitment to driving industrialisation, creating employment, and building a sustainable energy future for our nation.

This policy will also help establish a stable and sustainable pricing regime, contributing to greater control of inflation and long-term economic stability.

President Tinubu’s ability to deploy policy as a catalyst for economic transformation is truly commendable.

His focus on empowering local producers and promoting value addition within Nigeria exemplifies the type of visionary leadership required to steer our nation towards realising its ambition of becoming a $1 trillion economy.

Should have waited to 1st see if the policy will impact positively on the masses, than to rush to praise the policy.

The elite who benefit from this govt will always support her bad policies.

Tarrif is to discourage importation according to them, but what happens from the domestic side of manufacturing and selling cheaper to tame import? Rice importation that was banned, how far did we go?

Fuel imported from far away countries selling and competing cheaply with local product, isn't that economic suicide? Same crude we export to other countries, we no import and sell even comparatively to locally produced. Isn't this an obvious indictment on our producers that they are our major problem?

A country devoted to building comprador bourgeoisies as against national builders will continue to suffer.

Nigeria is irredeemable.

The only person this tariff policy benefits is Dangote. And it is not surprising that his friend, someone who would not have gotten to where he is without protectionist policies of the state as well, is speaking out in support.

Nairaland is full of non intellectual comment.

The post is about cutting importation yet some comments are trying to disregard the post.
If only there is another site where reasonable comment can be found.
We cry of importing everything yet some want to label a move against it as rubbish.

Any reasonable person will protect his family from outside invaders in any way possible.

This tariff by the president though painful is needed to checkmate those bent on importing fuel with our hardearned foreign currency.

With time under Tinubu I believe this country will be great again

The only person that built a refinery is Dangote. So why wouldn't he enjoy the policy. You guys never believed something good like Dangote refinery will ever come to this country.

Again, May Nigeria happen to you the way you wish it would be.

I am sure those who could not live in their region will be talking nonsense against Otedola. They detest others who speak in favour of government yet there fake messiah was a failure as a governor. They think Nigeria Nigeria should go the way of Libya, a country that is now worse than how Gaddafi left it. They are sad not because of the state of our country but because they lost election
. They are bitter and hateful because of one failure who will never become anything politically in Nigeria. They will surely be at the receiving end if Trump dares to invade our country

Re: 15% Import Tariff: Femi Otedola Praises President Tinubu by Bmaster(m): 6:50am On Nov 04, 2025
okay, but Again how do we the masses differentiate between imported petrol and locally refined petrol when we get to the filling station?

Mind you, dubious filling station managers littered across Nigeria will still likely sell to the masses at cost at which the imported petrol is being sold, even though they bought from dangote

Nigerian masses are at the receiving end,and hence literally going to bear the burden no matter how you check mate the pump price!

I don't know what we still need imopted fuel for when we have refinery that can adequately cater for our needs
Re: 15% Import Tariff: Femi Otedola Praises President Tinubu by tundegan: 6:51am On Nov 04, 2025
Otedola is a true patriot.

President Tinubu is doing well by implementing the 15% import tariff. It shows his commitment to protecting local industries and promoting domestic production. This will go a long way in stabilizing prices and controlling inflation.

RhinoChest:
While I agree that protecting local refineries is important, what happens if the Dangote refinery breaks down, requires repairs, or faces supply disruptions? A proactive government should maintain strategic reserves of PMS, aviation fuel, diesel, and other essential fuels—stored in silos or depots—sufficient to last at least six months to a year. You won’t want supply disruption around election year, so work with NNPC to build strategic reserves across Nigeria
That tax will discourage imports and encourage local production. At this point, Nigeria should've made a law that bans companies from consistently importing things we can manufacture locally for more than 15 years. If you cannot produce it locally, shut down the damn company.

That's the bold step Dangote is taking and everyone must emulate him. It seems you missed the basic part of economics that teaches how importation kills local economies.
Re: 15% Import Tariff: Femi Otedola Praises President Tinubu by amstamon: 6:53am On Nov 04, 2025
Says by a major shareholder in the dangote refinary.
For your information, most of these so called oil mogules are all parts of the dangote refinary ownerships .
In a saner economic world, are they all not supposed to be competing? Imagine all of them going on a constant visit to the refinery when it was still under construction, doesn't that tells you alot of what's happening in the country?.
This kontri is officially dead, killed by the so called defenders of the CURRUPT politicians. Consciously defending lies without conscience just because of monthly stipends
