Donald Trump has threatened to send US troops into Nigeria “guns blazing” unless the African nation does more to end the “horrible atrocities” being committed against Christians.

In a video posted to Truth Social on Thursday, President Trump warned the Nigerian government it “better move fast” or it would be subject to military action that was “fast, vicious and sweet”.

“If the Nigerian government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the USA will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria,” President Trump said.

“We're going to do things to Nigeria that Nigeria is not going to be happy about, and may very well go into that now disgraced country guns blazing to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible, horrible atrocities.”

President Trump said he had instructed the Department of War to “prepare for possible action”, describing the nation’s Christian population as “cherished” and “great people” that needed to be left alone.

“Warning: the Nigerian government better move fast before it's too late. If they don't, there's going to be hell to pay you,” he said.

“If we attack it will be fast, vicious and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our cherished Christians.”

The warning comes just days after the US designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over the rights of religious minorities – a designation reserved for countries responsible for severe violations of religious freedom.

Nigeria is home to more than 200 million people and around 200 ethnic groups, with the country’s north being largely Muslim and the south mostly Christian.

Insurgents such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province have wreaked havoc in the country for more than 15 years, killing thousands of people.

But their attacks have been largely confined to the Northeast of the country, which is majority Muslim.

In central Nigeria, mostly Muslim herders and mainly Christian farmers have clashed frequently over access to water and pasture. In the Northwest, gunmen routinely attack villages, kidnapping residents for ransom.

Analysts have told Reuters that the majority of victims of religious violence are muslim, although former U.S. envoy to the region J. Peter Pham, who served during Trump's first term, said Christians suffered disproportionately to their share of Nigeria's population.

Multiple Nigerian government figures have defended the nation’s record when it comes to combating terrorism.

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff General Olufemi Oluyede said on Monday that the country faced terrorism, not persecution of Christians, and that they would welcome US help in fighting Islamist insurgents as long as the country's territorial integrity is respected.

Information Minister Mohammed Idris said on Thursday that Trump's threats of military action were unwarranted and misrepresented Nigeria's complex security challenges.

"Any narrative suggesting that the Nigerian State is failing to take action against religious attacks is based on misinformation or faulty data," the Minister said.

Mr Idris said the Nigerian government had killed more than 13,500 militants, arrested 17,000 suspects and rescued over 11,200 hostages — including women and children.

"The Government of Nigeria remains open and willing to work closely with the Government of the United States, other friendly nations and partners, to achieve our shared goal, the complete elimination of terrorism on Nigerian soil,” he said.

I hate commenting here but this narrative is stale. Is Nigeria treating her citizens well? No country is perfect but if things were working even for just a little, if the leaders GENUINELY care about the poor masses, do you think people would be begging America to come solve our problems?
