Why I Won’t Assess Tinubu’s Government Now – Soyinka by Maxymilliano(op): 8:10am On Nov 06, 2025
Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, says he is not yet ready to publicly assess the administration of President Bola Tinubu, citing repeated misrepresentation of his comments.

In an interview with BBC News Yoruba published on Facebook on Tuesday, the world- renowned writer and activist said he was still taking his time and would express his perception of the Tinubu government when he deems it appropriate.

I have been asked that question by several people,” Soyinka, speaking in Yoruba language, told his interviewer. “I don’t want to answer because it seems as if there’s nothing one says that won’t be twisted, and I’m tired of that.”

So, I want to take my time. When it’s time, I will write my view on that,” he said.

An influential public figure and opinion moulder, Soyinka is known for his criticism of successive Nigerian governments, including the administrations of former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan and the late Muhammadu Buhari.

He has, however, yet to publicly voice his assessement of the Tinubu’s government, over two years into the administration.

In 2019, Soyinka took a swipe at Buhari’s government, saying it had failed Nigerians in its handling of the country’s security challenges.

In 2021, he also told Kaftan TV, “I don’t want to talk about Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. I think it is best for my sanity just to avoid that overall question. I can take bits and pieces of Nigeria’s present predicament, but I think for one’s sense of balance, one must forget the existence of the Buhari administration.”

The Nobel laureate, who has also been in the news recently over the revocation of his US visa, also told BBC Yoruba that he had no intention of reapplying, despite being asked to do so by the US Consulate in Lagos.

He said, “If you read the letter sent to me by the embassy, they wrote that I should bring my passport for them to stamp it so it shows that it has been cancelled. They are jokers. I should take my passport to those who revoked my visa? I told them they should come to my house, take the passport themselves, and stamp it. So, I cannot say I’ll be applying again or sitting down to fill out any form, whether online or having to go there — no.

“But if they want — because I’m not fighting the American people, no — if in the future they realise that they made a mistake and ask me to come and take my visa back, I will say they should bring it to my house. And before you come to my house, you will need a visa to enter.”

Soyinka, during a media parley last Tuesday in Lagos, announced the revocation of his B1/B2 visa by the US Embassy.

“It is necessary for me to hold this press conference so that people in the United States who are expecting me for this event or that event do not waste their time. I have no visa; I am banned, obviously, from the United States. And if you want to see me, you know where to find me,” the 91-year-old told journalists at Kongi’s Harvest Art Gallery, Freedom Park, Lagos Island.

Soyinka, who has been a vocal critic of US President Donald Trump, said he did not know the reason for the revocation of his visa.

However, the US Consulate in Lagos clarified last Thursday in response to an inquiry from The PUNCH that visas granted by the country are a privilege, not a right.

“Visas are a privilege, not a right. Every country, including the United States, can determine who enters its borders. Visas may be revoked at any time, at the discretion of the U.S. government, whenever circumstances warrant,” the U.S. Mission in Nigeria stated.

Nobody rates him anymore except the people who are denying genocide on their own countrymen. 2023 revealed who a specific group of people in Nigeria are.

Those that have benefitted from.this government programs, those that have seen, feel, experience the positive policies and reforms of this government, the opposition will struggle to convince them to vote for their candidate
Re: Why I Won’t Assess Tinubu’s Government Now – Soyinka by Nwaikpe:
Let me tell you guys a story. Maybe our Southern brothers will learn from it:

You know, there is this self-imposed effort by the Yorubas (Yb) to prove to the Hausas (Hs) that they are also muzlims (Mz). The same effort is on the Hs to prove to the Fulanis (Fn) that they are also Mz. So also there is the same pressure on the Fn to prove to North Africans, then North Africans to prove to Arabs, and Arabs to prove to Saudis. But my story will focus on a very good friend of mine; let's call him "Abiola."

Upon our entrance to Ahmadu Bello University, Abiola, being from one of those southwestern states and having a very strong and radical commitment to his religion, was even a college amir from where he was coming from.

So, upon resumption, this guy had this hot pressure to PROVE his allegiance to the Northerners. But it didn't age well. This is what happened:
The first day of lectures, when it was one o'clock, this guy went and did gra gra and called prayers in the mosque. grin grin grin My good Hs brothers literally stood outside until those who responded to his call finished praying before they went in. He repeated it the first day, second day, and third day. Then he asked questions as to why Hs guys were not responding. grin grin grin

Let me cut the story short:
Another of his Mz brothers from Edo State called him aside and advised him, telling him that it doesn't work that way. That they (non-northerners) are considered almost as Non-Ms or even Christians by the Northerners. He decided to confirm it. He called prayers the next day and saw everyone standing outside until the MusChris finished their prayers. At this point, his gra gra ended.

Anyways, 2 years later Abiola became an usher in Koinonia.
grin grin grin grin grin
His identity is concealed because of the consequences. But after reading this story, he too will laugh.

You will NEVER, I repeat, NEVER see a Yb Mz that schooled in the North that will ever join his peers that have never crossed Osun state borders to be against other Southerners. NEVER.
They have tasted life, and have proved it. grin grin grin

Whatever the outcome of your assessment is, I will believe the opposite. You lack the ability to make rational conclusions and analysis of a real life situation.
You were against Jonathan's government, yet it was the best government after Obasanjo's.

Same old same old rubbish.
You would have thought that literary intelligence will equate with sensibility.

Obviously not.
No one calls bullsheet by its name anymore because they're obviously more hungry than the poorest of us.

Man did not hesitate to be a political singing bird when others (Saint GEJ, et al) were in power. But, this one speaks same language as me, so of course I won't talk about the sorrows now. More bad things should happen so I can write a book.

They therefore moved that “President Donald Trump acted appropriately and decisively to redesignate Nigeria as a CPC and hold the Nigerian government accountable for its complicity in religious persecution by radical Islamists, such as Boko Haram and Fulani terrorists.”

This scare crow can fade off. Your mouth was loud during Jonathan's time but all of a sudden you are finding reasons to side step stating the obvious because your tribal person is in power. Your silence though doesn't change what everyone already sees and feels and that's the fact that Tinubu is a failure.
