Praise be to Allah! May the peace and blessings of Allah be on the last messenger of Allah, his companions, family and all those who follow him till the the day of resurrection. Celebrating birthdays is a topic of considerable discussion within Islamic scholarship, and many scholars argue against it for various reasons. Here are five comprehensive reasons why celebrating birthdays is generally considered impermissible in Islam, supported by evidence from authentic sources: 1.Imitation of Non-Muslims: Celebrating birthdays is seen as an imitation of disbelievers. Many scholars argue that this practice has no roots in Islamic tradition and is borrowed from cultures that do not follow Islam."It is forbidden for people to celebrate birthdays, as this is an imitation of disbelievers because Muslims didn’t know this custom before." Prophet Muhammad (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said also:" Whoever imitates some people, he is one of them". Narrated by Abu Dawood from Ibn Umar. 2.Innovation in Religion (Bid'ah): Birthdays are viewed as a form of Bid'ah, or innovation in religion. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned against introducing new practices into Islam that have no basis in the Qur'an or Sunnah. "Muslims do not celebrate birthdays because it is a kind of innovation in religion which has no basis in the pure Shari`ah." That is because the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Beware of newly-introduced matters in religion), for every newly-introduced matter is a Bid’ah and every Bid’ah is a Dalalah (deviation from what is right).” He (peace be upon him) said in his sermon on Friday: Ama Ba’d (Now then), the best of speech is the Book of Allah, the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam), the most evil of matters are those which are newly introduced in religion), and every Bid’ah is a Dalalah (deviation from what is right). It is sufficient for a Mu’min (believer) to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and carry on his tradition, and keeping far from Bid’ahs. Love for the Prophet (peace be upon him) is not in committing Bid’ahs, but in following his way (peace be upon him), abiding by his commands, avoiding his prohibitions, and invoking peace and blessings upon him whenever he is mentioned. May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him at all times. Introducing Bid’ahs is a means that incurs his anger and the wrath of Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He). As for denouncing the people of Bid’ah, Allah (Glorified be He) says: Or have they partners (with Allâh — false gods) who have instituted for them a religion which Allâh has not ordained? (Part No. 3; Page No. 43) Imam Ibn Baaz NB: Innovation in Religion does not include technological innovations! 3.Pagan Origins: Many scholars highlight that the origins of birthday celebrations are rooted in pagan customs. For instance, it is noted that "A quick Google search reveals the pagan origins of birthday celebrations. This is reason enough not to celebrate birthdays." This connection to paganism raises concerns about the appropriateness of such celebrations in Islam. 4.Focus on the Hereafter: Islam emphasizes the importance of the hereafter and the transient nature of life. Celebrating birthdays can distract individuals from their spiritual duties and the reality of life’s brevity. As stated in various Islamic teachings, the focus should be on preparing for the afterlife rather than celebrating the passage of time. 5.Celebrating a Decrease in Life Span: The final reason is a philosophical one: celebrating a birthday signifies that one is getting closer to death. This perspective can be seen as backward, as it emphasizes the decrease in life span rather than the blessings of life. Reflecting on this, one might consider whether it is wise to celebrate the inevitable approach of death rather than focusing on the quality and purpose of life itself. Even a person that is to die at 25 will be looking forward to celebrating his 25th birthday! We ask Allah to guide us to the truth and keep us firm upon it till the end!

Did you people ever consider that your prophet may have not celebrated birthdays because there was simply no calendars like we have now in those days? It was a lunar calendar that was in use, so there was no anniversary like we have today? Isn't that the reason why islamic holidays don't fall on predetermined days each year? Isn't that the reason why muslims still depend on the moon to know when to celebrate their holidays? Now imagine everyone has to spend 2 or 3 days shadowing the moon to know when to celebrate his or her birthday, wouldn't that be a waste of time and energy? By the way, without innovation that phone you used to type this thing, the internet you used to post, even the fan blowing you, the bus you took to the mosque, the micro phone you use in your sermons they all wouldnt exist, you could even be dead by now cos there wont be hospitals to take care of you when you were sick. So innovations can never be bad...Nothing stays the same forever, nothing, Change is constant. That is the truth. Only mentally lazy people hate innivation. |

BlackfireX:You do realise you just committee a fallacy of exact quote? So everything must be mentioned verbatim in the Qur'an before you can derive meaning and understanding? So what is the essence of the brain God gave you if you can't use it to study the wisdom behind the words of God and derive implicit meanings? |

The American Government should also come and help traditional worshippers as both christians and Muslims are persecutging us. Traditional worshippers are being persecuted in Kwara State by Muslims as we are not allowed to carry out our festivals. While in other part of the country our shrines are being destroyed by pastors in the name of deliverance. Christians calls us unprintable names. In Nollywood it is only traditional doctors that are evil as these christians producers want the public to perceived us evil and as a result many nigerians can't identify themselves as traditional worshippers while thier pastors are portrayed as the good one in Nollywood movies. The Government only made funds availakble for Christians and Muslims pilgrims and Nothing for traditionalist who wish to go to festival in Brazil and other foriegn who respect their traditional religion. Nigeria Government also build National Mosque and Church and non for traditionalists the real owner of the land. I want to use this opportunity to call on the United States Government and the international community to come to the aid of traditionalists in Nigeria. We are suffering persecution from foreign religion and no one is speaking for us Our Demands Nigerians Nollywood movie Producers stop painting us as evil in Nollywood movies. Indians, Chinese don't paint their traditional worshippers bad foreign religion good in their movies it only in Nigeria it happens. Religion is a personal and private affair in United States and sane countries but Nigeria Government said they have too much money that they don't know what to do with it. They have been sending christians and Muslims to pilgrims they should include traditional worshippers. Nigeria have National Mosque and Church but no National traditional center for the real owners of the land |
