Iceking1:When a junior officer gets promoted to COAS, his senior colleagues can't work under him, due to the hierarchy, in such cases, retirement often becomes the only option to maintain harmony and respect within the force |

Iceking1:The Generals have to go because they can't salute or take orders from their course mate, who is now a luitenant general, so all of them have to retire to maintain the military code of conduct |

Eriokanmi: The Abubakar story is not 100% correct when you talk about seniority. Firstly he only skipped one rank, Lt General, however he was senior to Bamaiyi in 2 important ways. Firstly he was CDS, and there is little doubt that is actually the most senior military office, and to be fair Nigeria has kept to that tradition since it was instituted. Also he actually joined the military many years before Bamaiyi as an Airforce cadet and an Army officer later. Most military people tend to respect when you joined over even rank (secretly) as they know that was devoid of politics. Also, if we're talking about the most senior officer at Abacha's death, Useni seniored all of them, including Abacha by when he first joined the military . He also seniored the rest by becoming a Lt General before all of them. So anyway, the right call was made by the military during Abdulsalami's time , and obviously this later proved true for most Nigerians who wanted democracy ( at the rate they were enjoying, there was very little hope that Jerry boy or Bamaiyi would have handed over power to civilians). |

geezville86:I did not know about the Buratai and Buhari connection. Before his promotion, there was an interesting media piece on how some senior officers serving in the North, disobeyed commands and stopped Buhari from being rigged out during the 2015 election. I tend to give that piece some credence and tend to believe that was why Adeosun had his lasting power as Buhari and others felt they owed him. Will post it below when I find it. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/312079-exclusive-inside-the-secret-meeting-by-army-officers-ordered-to-disrupt-2015-presidential-election.html?tztc=1

| Re: Meet The Simultaneous Lt-Gen. Holders In The History Of The Nigerian Army by Kalulu44: 2:07am On Nov 07, 2025 |
Iceking1:I really don't know much, but from my observation I think those ones going on compulsory retirement are seniors to the new COAS and it will be bad or don't look nice to be answerable to him. Cus as the new chief they'll be answerable to him even though they're his seniors. So they have to make way by retirement in other for the new chief to assert his authority on the rank and file below him. |

Iceking1:You already partly answered your own question. Usually, from the position of Brigadier-General or Commodore, a lot of politics comes into promotion from there already. COAS is a very political position. The most political even. So, if somebody from 41RC is made COAS, like the current gentleman, it's not great to have too many Major Generals from 40RC or 39RC or earlier, who are his seniors by date of commissioning, to be under him. Even Brigadier-Generals commissioned before him may have to quietly go, too. The political move of retiring senior officers, who should be senior to the COAS, Chief of Naval Staff or Chief of Air Staff, ever so often, every about two years at times, is very costly to national wallet. At times, up to 40 senior officers are retired together across the three services. Prematurely. Their retirement packages run into billions of Naira. |

Franking:You are very correct. Just yesteday, i told two guys that our major problems in Nigeria till date are these boys scout generals(military/police) and the very useless people we call politicians or political leaders. We speak our history through the coup plotters all the time, giving them too much relevance. It is high time we stop it. Let us create new ways of thinking away from these men who only bully civilians without guns, lets start talking about men and women whom have contributed to education and innovations, whether home or abroad . If we think deeply we could see a pattern of historic bullying by these boys scouts and now these bandits, militant of the Niger delta and the rest were the outcome as small and light weapons became plentiful in the world and are easily transported with the support of men who have the political and financial connections whom have eitheir suffered in the past from uniform or want power for themselves. Nigerian Politicians deep down hate uniform men but can't say it or get rid of them. And an unproductive supposed general wants to be a politician after retirement. I don't think the west(civilians) with strong Armies barely talk about their army men in their daily lives. Dem no dey talk coup, na history of progress of one particular invention to another. I said if the USA can successfully execute their military campaign without our boys scouts interference and later demilitarized nigeria and its uniform mentality, then we as a people, try to make sure there are reductions in all those big money given to politicians as salaries and allowances(less attractive). Just maybe we would progress and improve the living conditions of our citizens. OUR TWO PROBLEMS. |

wellmax:why? this is a nigerian thing and not universal, heirarchy could be based on the first person that got promoted to that rank or based on command position. "There are about 37 active-duty four-star officers in the U.S. military 11 in the Army, 3 in the Marine Corps, 9 in the Navy, 12 in the Air Force, 3 in the Space Force, and 1 in the Coast Guard". and it also doesn't make sense to force people to retire also. if your junior is promoted above you. it should be upto the individual himself to decide if he wants to resign or not if he doesn't want to resign then he must take orders from his new superior. army generals take orders from a civilian authority like the presidents or nsa |

AndroBlaze:You tried but not all correct pieces of information were put up by you on the position of Abdulsalaam Abubakar before becoming head of state. Please do your findings. The immediate senior to him was Lieutenant General Jeremiah Useni. Useni was commissioned the LT Gen ahead of Gen Abdulsalaami Abubakar, even though Gen Abubakar joined the army before him. Gen Abubakar ought to have even gone farther than that much earlier but due to the unsubstantiated unruly behaviour when serving at the Odogbo military barracks at Ojoo in ibadan, his promotion was delayed. This isn't a debatable fact. We get one oga for military for my family and I had to call thim to confirm this before posting it. He served actively in anacha's administration so he was in the know of everything.Gen Oladipo Diya was the most senior but because they needed a regime change, being the second-in-command to Abacha(though ceremoniously) Gen. Diya wasn't considered a successor. I doubt Google will differ, if you check |

Eriokanmi:Bros, no be only you get family during Abacha, some of us were there live and direct and met these people, Google cannot be needed for eyewitness experience... remember this is an online forum so you cannot be sure who you are speaking to. Anyway, you did not read what I said before you posted your epistle. I had already agreed that Useni seniored everyone by rank and when he joined , however as an FCT minister, he is no more than a governor and until you can show me where in the past a governor succeeded a head of state without a coup then you need to go and speak to your family member some more. The seniority of your office has always mattered in the Army. Also Abdulsalami was never a Lt General and was promoted from Major General to General when he became C in C, which again shows you did not read people's comments before you dropped yours. |
| Re: Meet The Simultaneous Lt-Gen. Holders In The History Of The Nigerian Army by Eriokanmi: 9:49am On Nov 08, 2025 |
AndroBlaze:I didn't say you never agreed to the fact that Oseni seniored Abdulsalaam by rank and I read your post well before responding, I only corroborated what you said, that though the former joined military earlier, the latter seniored him by military ranking and I told you what you didn't know...why his promotion was stagnated due to his odoogbo barracks' unruly behaviour. The retired military officer in the family was Abdulsalaam Abubakar's colleague in that barracks back then, in charge of transportation. That said, if you read my so-called epistle from the first post, you'd have seen where I talked about Abdulsalaam ranking on becoming head of state, meaning the Lt General position was skipped and he became full general( to fit into that office of head of state). I never said he was ever commissioned a Lt General as you posted in response. I was harping on seniority when I said oseni even became a Lt General ahead of Abdulsalaam( he got there before the rank was skipped for Abdulsalaam), not that he was ever commissioned a Lt general. Grammar can be complicated at times, except when expatiated Truly here's a public forum where nobody knows anyone. You dont know me as well, just as I dont know you. Let's leave it that way. Gd morning |

Eriokanmi:Bro,we are not fighting (or disagreeing apparently ), thanks for your contribution. As for the incident you talked about that delayed his rise in the army, I knew about it already as Bamaiyi had already made it public in his book where he actually stated it was a proper court martial Abdusalami faced for stealing earlier in his career. Anyway, since you reminded me about Bamaiyi's book, it is important to note that when the meeting to choose the Head of State started properly, Bamaiyi states he was the one that stood up and nominated Abdulsalami, so that should put to rest the question of seniority regarding Bamaiyi and Abdulsalami despite the difference in ranks. |

AndroBlaze:Fight kee, nope. Na you mention stealing oo, no be me. I've been trying to avoid mentioning the offence he committed. Please where can I find Bamaiyi's Book and what's the title? I didn't know it was mentioned elsewhere. Thanks. |
