The King’s birthday was this week, and I was just thinking out loud , is there even a more relatable “Bollywood” face than this legend? At least outside of India, here in Nigeria, he is Mr. Bollywood, that much I know.

My formative years of getting into Bollywood lore and falling in love with it had so much to do with him. A genre-bending actor, he could be anything! a perfect testament to how good he truly is. From Deewana (1992) to Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1994), Don (2006), Om Shanti Om (2007), and Jawan (2023), we’ve witnessed a master at his absolute peak.

I remember a fond memory from the early 2000s in my family home (Bollywood freaks, these lot 😭). We had just rented Duplicate (1998) on VHS back when VHS rental clubs were a thing and we were still a high-trust society 😭. We all gathered around the one singular 12inch barely coloured JVC telly in the house to watch the King play two versions of himself, Bablu, an aspiring chef, and Manu, a gang*ter. He played both roles with such delicate dexterity that it got the whole house divided on who to side with, and let’s be honest, Manu was looking really appealing 👀😩. A memory I’ll cherish forever.

Maybe Amitabh Bachchan rivals his popularity, but it’s negligible, in my opinion. I remember tweeting about Jawan and the King back in 2023 and Indians camped in my mentions for weeks.

The King is 60 this week, and perhaps in the twilight of his illustrious career, but he remains an absolute legend. I’m just grateful to have witnessed his greatness over the years.

Happy Belated Birthday, King Shah Rukh Khan!! 🥳🎉
We actually discovered King Khan late in my house. Early 2000s Salman Khan had a chokehold on my sisters till they discovered the King and, in feminine fashion, promptly tossed the lesser Khan aside.
Might just pop on one of his movies in my backlog for this Sunday to celebrate.

Honey Don't.......4/10

Absolute basic nothing movie.
I'm wondering what I saw in the trailer that made me decide to watch this.
Don't know maybe it's cos I saw Chris Evans or Margaret Qualley and the director Ethan Coen, that I thought I'd have a good time at least. Asides the sex and nudity on occasions, there's hardly much I enjoyed about this.

The writing and storytelling was pretty weak. Dialogue was mostly shitty. Was more or less interested in when it'd end. I don't even understand what the plot is about. Only coherent theme I could pick up was the strong girl boss protagonist. The characters, I constantly wondered how some served the story. With plotlines changing midway, I began to wonder what I was actually watching.
Pretty disappointing.

Movie title did warn me Honey Don't..... But I didn't. 🤦🏽‍♂️

Basic Instinct (1992).....7/10

This follows multimillionaire Catherine Trammell after her boyfriend dies mysteriously in his home. Then comes detective Nicky "shooter" Hoss who seeks to get down to the root cause and is entangled in a battle of wits with two smart beautiful women with tragic pasts and degrees in psychology to boot.

The confusing storytelling style making you guess who the villainess was— who did what and what not? It was nice and smart play. Keeping you guessing from time to time despite showing you some easter eggs that truly reveals the culprit right in your face.

Ambiguous ending that can be interpreted by everyone anyhow they like. But what's pretty clear is that Sharon Stone was an otherworldly exciting Femme Fatale.

While Hoss knew who the true killer was, he remained with her. I guess they're more of the same especially with his continuous bouts of killing people yet getting away with it.

Sh@qqing like minks was a very appetizing proposition than probably facing the bleak personality disorder, I guess. grin Many would have done the same with that enticing sëdúctres$ to boot.

The erötiç!sm and nüdity was top tier and a glorious watch. Quite entertaining film. Keeps you glued right from the start till you finish. Superb eröt!c thriller with pristine rewatch value. A classic. That scene will forever remain GOATED.

For this movie to make a billion, they have to recreate what his concerts felt like.

A significant part of the movie should show the iconic concerts and performances.

The super bowl halftime show which to this day remains one of the greatest super bowl halftime shows ever.

They need to recreate that from beginning to end.
If they could make the cinema like a concert and there are certain performances, it'd be insane

The Lighthouse......7/10

This is a film about loneliness and what extended periods of solitude would do to a man's psyche.
The two main characters battle for their sanity after being abandoned in a deserted lighthouse for weeks.

The loneliness, the boredom and the harshness of the sea slowly tests the mental resolve of the protagonists — what's real and what's not?
The dialogue is reminiscent of The Northman so it might not be a thrilling watch for casual watchers unless you're neck deep in Robert Eggers style of horror. It is a psychological horror fare through and through.

It was my least enjoyed Robert Eggers movie but it's probably one of his most poignant stories I've watched.

Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe delivered powerful performances to keep this as interesting as possible while still maintaining the dread and hopelessness the tale was more about. I'd never underestimate Robert no more. He can deliver basically any performance. Dude is absolutely versatile anyday anytime. I was more than impressed with his acting.

Seeing Robert play a crazed person was kinda funny in a weird way. The film also had some dark comedy sprinkled in.
Willem Dafoe— I can't talk much about him cos he ALWAYS delivers. His long monologues were a joy to watch and quite funny at the same time. His facial expressions truly sell you the ramblings of a m@d man. grin

What I'm still wondering about is whether the mermaid Robert Pattinson's character saw was real or a fiction of imagination?

Goes a long way to show how Pattinson has gone through the long and hard journey to make sure he isn't typecast and develop his acting acumen. He's grown a formidable filmography for himself that you'd struggle to remember him at his Twilight days.

A movie is 8K in the cinema now? Wow. Only when someone is broke he starts taking notice of prices. Anyway, Predator Badlands was worth the watch. It wasn't as amazing as critics are making it out. Money must've changed hands. I'm just happy I could watch it on opening day. The humour was too much. Haba, everything nowadays is trying to be the next MCU project. The tone should've been serious with one or two jokes sprinkled. There were two scenes in the film which made me burst out laughing. It was two out of twelve or more attempts at comedy. I hate when goons (good guys also) are shown to be competent in one scene only to topple easily scenes later. The minions should've at least put up a fight. The protagonist hadn't mastered stealth yet and the androids were not humans who're prone to occasionally lose their guard.

Oh well, if you can wait to watch it the Nairaland way, I suggest you do. I didn't come out blown away like after viewing Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. I use those two movies and 300 to gauge my cinema experiences. Oh yeah, I also enjoyed Immortals in the cinema. I keep forgetting that movie.

I will wait to watch Avatar on streaming. The films don't seem to re-invent the wheel past fancy visuals.

Nigerian cinema culture is dead. I was disappointed that less than forty people came out to watch a new movie on a Friday evening of all days.

This is one of those top tier slow burn psychological horror films. I think this was the project that introduced me to one of my favourite directors — Robert Eggers. And probably the film that made me seriously following Anya Taylor Joy's career. I must have watched her in Split earlier but couldn't remember her much then.

And Black Phillip is a top tier actor. 🤪🤪

Easy 8.5/10 for me. Hoping to someday soon enough get a rewatch. It's darn pretty hard for me to rewatch films.

Careful though, if you no Sabi Old English like that, it'd be pretty hard to understand the dialogue and themes of much of Robert Eggers films. Man is dedicated to that old language. I also like it too. A break from the norm.
