Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has dismissed growing endorsements for Seyi Tinubu to become the next governor of Lagos State, saying the president’s son lacks the experience required to lead the state.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with DAILY INDEPENDENT ahead of his 80th birthday, George said he would be “shocked” if Seyi succeeds Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu when the latter’s tenure ends in 2027.

“I will be shocked if Seyi Tinubu becomes the governor of Lagos State in 2027. How is he qualified for the position? Where is the experience? What has he done before apart from being the son of Tinubu? Well, if their father says it should be him, good luck to them,” George said.

Although Seyi has not publicly declared his intention to run, several groups within the state have begun endorsing him for the top political office.

George also took a swipe at the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, over the reported N20.4 billion donation for the construction of a new National Library complex. He urged her to divert the funds toward skill acquisition programmes to address rising unemployment and poverty.

“What library are you building? People are hungry and you are talking about building a library. I want to remind her that education makes people easy to govern but impossible to deceive. Let her change her mind. There is hunger and anger in the land,” he said.

He argued that in an era where digital resources are readily available, a physical library is not a national priority.

“Turn that money given to you for national library into skill acquisition. Let people acquire skills so they can work and cater for their needs. Forget about any library. These days, you can go to any computer and find out whatever you need. AI is also there. What are you building a national library for? The national library we need now is skill acquisition that will assuage the anger of millions of Nigerians,” George added.

What's all the fuzz about Seyi Tinubu? That guy looks cool and humble. I think I prefer him to his father who has nothing to offer at the national level.

Perhaps his father can step aside and allow the son to continue as governor. Even if you make a goat the governor of Lagos, he will do something because the state is small and has so much money to throw around.

Sanwo-Olu can’t install a successor. Obasa has been told to shelve his ambition, while Gbajabiamila, who also showed interest, has been told to swallow it.

Ambode? He can’t come back. The train has long passed. He remains the most disgraced former governor since the return of democracy in 1999.

As a sitting governor, his party denied him the gubernatorial ticket for a re-election that the constitution guaranteed him. Instead of decamping to another party and using state resources to fight back and upstage the GAC and the drug baron, he chickened out. Had he put up a fight, he might have won through sympathy votes. He had absolutely nothing to lose, But he backed down after being warned that if he tried, he would be impeached and rendered irrelevant.

Today, he is still irrelevant and forgotten, like he was never even a governor of Lagos State. He looks pitiful whenever he appears on TV or at any event. Just there, no recognition. He must be regretting.

Yorubalokan BATists in Lagos are getting free daily bread palliative already in the absence of well paid jobs promised by Tinubu since 1999 in Lagos, and since 2015 by APC in Abuja.

If all these years, impoverished people hang around you and you remain comfortable enough to keep them just so they can be handed tokens of your large heart, then it means you have a pro-poverty mindset. Such a frame of mind is oriented toward cultivating poverty rather than stimulating abundance.

That is why he could unproblematically relate the story of his “friend” who went from using five Rolls Royce to a far-less valued car and not consider the import of the nonsense he was saying. That spurious account was an indication that this is a man for whom poverty—of others, not himself—is an ideal.

Baba Olabode George is supposed to know that even Sanwoolu also didn't have experience before he assumed office in 2015, but he gathered the experience on the job.

The major reason why some of us will not support Seyi Tinubu is that we will not allow Omo Igbo to be the Lagos State first lady.
