If u understand the military setting u will know that they act based on orders. An officer must always act in accordance wit the order given to him/her from a superior officer.
Isn't that why late Fela called them Zombies? They are trained to follow orders to the last. Therefore, there was nothing Lt Yerima could have don because he was acting on an order from his boss. And in such a situation only his boss is capable of telling him to withdraw.
We shouldn't blame the officer here because there was nothing he could have done. Except u want him to disobey his boss and risk serious punishment.

Army is still subordinate to the cabinet and the president.

I like the decorum displayed by the Lieutenant. He was following orders and he knew the consequences of disobeying an order.
The Minister should have understood that the Lieutenant is a military personnel and not a civilian or paramilitary personnel. He would have just walked away knowing fully well that a military man does not take order from a civilian.
