Seriously the most fascinated thing here is they were able to detect the cracks and shifts and close it out for users to prevent casualty. That's a thumbs up. As for the structural failure, it's human.

This heading is misleading…
The landslide let to the destruction of the bridge.
And that area sure looks like a place that prone to landslide

Exactly the approach needed by a functioning government, preventing the disaster after all there’s always signs if you look closely.
Another angle
China’s Government would construct a sustainable bridge much cheaper than what Nigeria uses to “renovate” 3MB
Thank you, nobody is even looking at it from the angle of they quickly nick it in the bud before it cause disaster
Re: Hongqi Bridge Collapses In China Months After Opening (video) by Kalulu44: 7:34pm On Nov 11, 2025
Majority of us here commenting nonsense just to praise our failed govt. First of the bridge didn't collapse bcus it was substandard. It was as a result of a landslides.
That apart, my major concern is how after they got the warning signals, they quickly stopped vehicles from using the bridge which makes no casualties after the fall of the bridge.
Can that be said if it were to be in Nigeria?

Poor news heading dissemination

'Land slide causes bridge collapse in china' would have been suitable as heading

Anyways, its all about traffic to the page

Oga, rest! This is just an occasional fail. China has built longer bridges that are still standing strong. This one is not even among the longest in China.

The USA you're trying to bring into the picture has recorded over 50 plane+helicopter crashes this year alone. And a quick Google search will let you know that bridges collapse in the US, too. One even happened last year, but the media didn't make a big deal out of it.

In my institution, we recently had a building collapse while it was still under construction. It wasn’t due to poor-quality materials; the real issue was that the land and soil structure were not suitable for a project of that size. The team leading the project was reprimanded for failing to consult a geotechnical expert before construction began.

By the same logic, for a bridge of this magnitude, one would expect that the surrounding land, rock formations, soil composition, and water bed would have been thoroughly assessed before any work started. Common sense demands that foundational studies like these must be done.
No doubt... seems it didn't matter if the soil was sand ... clay or rock ... neither did the magnitude of the building .... as long as the materials were not substandard. No surprise the building collapsed.

By the same logic ...doing all the necessary tests ... this case is different. Bear in mind ... this was more than a landslide ..it was like a mini earthquake with mountain shifting. What test should they have possibly done to avoid this? Besides getting the soil etc...I would fault them if the bridge was built at a point where there was a history of landslides ... in which case the location would've been a bad one regardless of soil. Nature is unpredictable.... there is nothing we can do to avoid it nor prevent damages.

I think it's mainly because of the terrain not necessarily substandard materials

Most of your comments don't make sense until you check what triggered the collapse and discover it was a landslide which is a natural disaster. Which means a shift in base soil and will pull the strongest structures down......

Don't mind them. Making fun when we have lots of Chinese products in Nigeria, Mobile phones: Xiaomi, oppo, redmi, Infinix, Tecno, Itel, Vivo, poco even iPhone is made partly made in Taiwan, a country under China. Not to talk of other electronics and gadgets.
Technology-wise, we do not compare. I don't even know where the audacity is coming from.
There is a city in China that have city upon or on top city and hasn't collapsed.
The collapsed bridge could have been as a result of the terrain or other reasons not necessarily substandard construction.

There's no big factory or company in Nigeria that don't have Chinese and other Asian people working in them.

Do they not factor all of that equation, (terrain, landslide, and earthquake) during their feasibility study before building that bridge??

Una dey experience the below in Nigeria

conditions on the mountainside worsened, triggering landslides, leading to the collapse of the approach bridge and roadbed

And that's ok if that was the case but I am not an engineer neither do I want to do a literature search now on the climatic changes that happens in that region. The point is that every factor both present and future should have been considered and measures put in place to mitigate the effect.

Tell you what, let us put this to rest. Give me a moment to do a quick research on the environmental changes that happen in that area. If I can get some answers in the next few mins then someone is culpable.

My findings from Chatgpt with references

Quick Summary on the Hongqi Bridge Collapse (Sichuan, China):

The region where the Hongqi Bridge was built is naturally one of the most landslide-prone areas in China. The mountains there have steep slopes, deep weak rock layers, heavy rainfall, and frequent small earthquakes. Because of this, sudden slope failures can happen without warning — even when engineers carry out soil tests and surveys.

Research confirms that Aba Prefecture has hundreds of slow-moving and high-risk landslides due to its terrain and geology
(Ren et al., 2025): https://doi.org/10.3390/rs17081462
and strong links between the region’s seismic activity and slope instability
(Shao et al., 2023): https://geoscienceletters.springeropen.com/articles/10.1186/s40562-023-00307-5

The bridge itself didn’t collapse because of weak materials. What failed was the mountain slope beside it. Many landslides in the area begin deep underground with no surface cracks or visible warning signs, so they’re extremely hard to detect beforehand.

Why build there at all?
Because that route is one of the only possible pathways linking central China to the Tibetan plateau. The terrain is so rugged that engineers often have no alternative but to build bridges, roads, and tunnels through risky areas. The choice is usually between building there — or having no connection at all.

Who is to blame?

If the early surveys showed danger and it was ignored → engineers or planners are at fault.

If the slope appeared stable and showed no warning signs → it’s more of a natural event that exceeded human prediction.

Based on what is known so far, it looks more like an unexpected deep-slope collapse rather than a straightforward engineering error. The final investigation will determine whether there was any negligence.
So in summary, there was a 50:50 chance that this project would fail which is crazy considering the vast resources invested in it.

Someone must have guaranteed a lower risk of a landslide affecting the bridge or on the flip side, the risks were clearly spelt out and they still decided to go ahead with it. Either way, somebody must definitely answer to this

Thanks for the research .... who to blame? These two paragraphs sums up everything! They knew it was risky ...but .... was worth taking. I guess they will rebuild ... maybe with a breakaway for when it happens again. There is really a need for that bridge ... I believe it's worth the risk.

Uwc. I belong to a different school of thought. The risks are way too high. I imagine they also had this debate before building the bridge.

Oh well, I enjoyed the discussion concerning this. I wish them well in their investigation. I hope they find a solution to this geological quagmire without anyone executed for mistakes made knowingly or unknowingly. Fingers crossed

Just got an alert from twitter on this subject matter. The comments will interest you. Apparently, the engineers in the group arrived at the same conclusions that I did and some suggested that someone will definitely be 'unalived' for this. Go figure

Mention one country in the world where earthquakes do not sink buildings despite all the so-called "factoring of equation".

When it comes to natural disasters that belong in the future, man can only try.

Reason they also see Africans as fools because they don’t read . You only read the headline because if you actually read the article you will see where they said is landslide that cause it to collapse. It called natural disaster.

The bridge collapsed due to a landslide-induced mountain deformation. This was a natural disaster.
