This is Tinubu’s moment to act decisively. Wike is an appointee who serves entirely at Tinubu’s pleasure, while the naval officer is a professional career serviceman, one of the few trained to uphold military standards and discipline. After the officer identified himself, his rank, and the fact that he was operating under the orders of a three-star general, Wike had one simple responsibility: get the names involved, verify the order, and work through the proper military channels. If he needed the officer to stand down, that request should have gone through the officer’s superiors, not through public humiliation. But instead of respecting the chain of command, Wike “shot the messenger,” calling him a “big fool” in front of his men, on camera, in view of the entire world. Soldiers across Nigeria saw it. Retired officers saw it. Active-duty personnel saw it. Even foreign military communities online saw it. That kind of public disrespect is a direct hit to morale. Wike also failed to restrain his own team. His police detail got aggressive, the NIA officer stepped in, his Mopol shoved and barked orders—all while Wike stood by. He should have told his team to stand down immediately, pulled the naval officer aside, and asked calmly: “What’s your name? Whose orders are you carrying out? Is this a lawful instruction?” Then he should have walked away, gone back to his office, and handled the matter through the proper chain of command—quietly, formally, and professionally. |

We’re focusing on the symptoms. The root cause is that democracy seems to have collapsed in Nigeria Look at these 11 warning signs of a collapsing democracy. All these alarming signals are flashing red currently. I don’t remember a time since 1999 when all 11 of them flashed red. Whatever you’re witnessing now is the result of the collapse of democracy. Ask Google what happens when democracy collapses. There could be severe consequences, this government needs to urgently address these issues: 1. When Rule of law has eroded: political elites become above the law, little to no consequence for corruption or abuse of power |

If not for the calm disposition of the officer, many lives would have been lost in that unfortunate incident. |

The Lt. was acting on instructions and command from a superior, I don’t blame him. He can’t take orders from Wike. What I find not cool are his men not obeying his own command when he asked them to stand down. He had to keep screaming “Ajuwaya” repeatedly but some of his men were still charging at the “unruly” police men. At the sound of Ajuwaya from the Lt. I expected his men to immediately stand down. That would have shown the higher level of discipline in the army compared to the police. |

nairalandkachy1:Same Buratai who ordered soldiers to resign if they are not ready to obey democratically elected leaders is now suggesting that demanding that a young officer obey order from constituted authorities is not in order. Is it because he's now retired and enjoying free loot of retirement benefits. Smh. If he was having a shouting match with a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and behaving like that young man in his early days as an officer, he will not reach the pinnacle of his career. He wants to ruin the career of that young man patapata.

Buratai should go and sit down. Wike is not the one to be disciplined. |
