Nigerian Government Suspends Indigenous Language In Schools, Upholds English As Primary Medium

The Nigerian government has suspended the use of indigenous languages as the medium of teaching in Nigerian schools, directing teachers nationwide to prioritise English as a medium of instruction.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the ban on Wednesday during the Language in Education International Conference 2025, organised by the British Council in Abuja.

The two-day event, themed “Language, Education and Inclusion: Empowering Every Learner,” brought together policymakers, educators, researchers, and development partners from Africa, South Asia, and the UK to discuss strategies for promoting equitable and quality education through language.

Alausa explained that while preserving indigenous languages remains important for cultural identity, English would now serve as the primary language of instruction from pre-primary to tertiary levels to enhance comprehension, learning outcomes, and global competitiveness.

The English language should be used to teach our students at all levels as a means of instruction,” the minister said.

Over the years, mother tongues have been used to teach, and this has largely been responsible for the failures recorded in exams.

The national policy on language has been cancelled. English now stands as the medium of instruction across all levels of education,” he added.

Alausa noted that English serves as a unifying tool across Nigeria’s diverse linguistic landscape, providing students with wider access to global knowledge, technology, and international opportunities.

He added that the decision was informed by data showing that excessive reliance on mother tongue instruction in some regions had negatively affected students’ performance in national examinations such as WAEC, NECO, and JAMB.

According to the minister, the new policy reflects a shift toward evidence-based governance, moving beyond what he described as an emotional attachment to language identity in the education sector.

In a related development, the British Council reaffirmed its commitment to advancing inclusive and equitable education through language-responsive teaching across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Julian Parry, Director of English Programmes for Sub-Saharan Africa, said language can serve as “a bridge to inclusion, identity and opportunity for every learner,” emphasizing the need for collaboration and knowledge-sharing to improve global education outcomes.

Also speaking, the Director of Programmes at British Council Nigeria, Chikodi Onyemerela, highlighted inclusion as a core principle of the Council’s educational partnerships.

“We are deeply privileged to be hosted in Nigeria. Since 2015, through our Pan-Ethnic Classrooms Programme, we have developed inclusive pedagogy initiatives that enable teachers to embed inclusive practices in the classroom,” Onyemerela said.

His arguments are flawed.

What about Indians, Chinese and even European countries who use their own indigenous language as language of instruction, and their students/graduates still compete favorably well when placed side by side with those taught in English in the global market?

They are taught using the official language of their respective countries. I think what is needed is to sustain usage of English as the medium of instruction while indigenous languages should be taught as standalone subjects.

The difference is that those kids in china and India also wrote their exams in their language.

In Nigeria, kids might learn in Hausa, igbo or yoruba but CE/WAEC/JAMB are held in English causing the kids to flop the exams.

Nigeria needs to adopt standard learning plans and provide exams that are held in other local languages.

God I keep asking u, why did u make me an African. Worse of all a Nigerian??

Does China, Japanese English to teach their student before they turn into Engineering and tech wizard that they are? They only teach their children English so that they will have it as a second language. It does not diminish their thinking faculty or reasoning.

Thank u for MR IBETO he taught us Physics in Pure Pidgin English. He is the reason I still love Physics up till today. He broke it down so simply that even the dullest student in our class started getting a D in physics without expo or anything.

The way people argue blindly on nairaland makes me believe that they are myopic. With over 250 languages, how do we pass instructions to one another when we meet ourselves outside our locality? Indians and Germans that some people mentioned speak one language. We are multi diversity and we should always think deep before exposing our ignorance. What of if Seun was thought throughout with Yoruba language, how would he be able to speak to all Nigerians? Let us be guided always and think of the best solutions to move the nation forward. criticising every policy of government can not take us anywhere

It is not flawed.

I understand the point about countries like China, India, and those in Europe using their native languages for instruction, but that comparison doesn’t fit Nigeria’s situation. Those countries each have a single dominant national language—like Mandarin, Japanese, or French—while Nigeria has over 500 distinct languages and no universally accepted one that can serve as a neutral medium of instruction. Choosing just one would immediately create inequality and deepen ethnic divides.

Beyond that, languages like Chinese or Hindi have long-established written standards, rich vocabularies, and well-developed scientific and technical terms built through centuries of national investment. Most Nigerian languages simply don’t have that level of linguistic infrastructure yet, so translating complex subjects like physics, medicine, or computer science into them would be nearly impossible at this stage.

Even in India, where local languages are widely used, English remains a co-official language and is still the main medium in higher education, science, technology, and international business. In fact, much of India’s global success in areas like IT and medicine is because of its strong foundation in English.

English gives Nigerian students access to global research, education, and employment opportunities. Abandoning it now would only isolate our graduates from the international stage. The smarter and more realistic path is a bilingual approach—teaching early education in local languages for better comprehension, while maintaining English as the language of science, technology, and global communication.

In truth, countries like China and India don’t succeed because they reject English; they succeed because they’ve built strong national languages and still value English as a bridge to the rest of the world. Until Nigeria develops that kind of linguistic foundation, English remains our most practical and unifying medium of instruction.
