Strangely, not government has been able to replicate this since 1977...rather they allocate land to "estate developers" to build unaffordable mansions! FESTAC was beautiful. I lived there from 84 to 99. In 1984 , on 23 road, the bungalows were unfenced...we weren't animals living in cages...parks, good roads...by the mid 90s the rot began. People bought up fields and green areas and started building mansions. People started fencing their individual houses, by 99...it was a mess. I havent been there ever since and can imagine how ot looks now |

Everything that makes up Nigeria today was built in the military era. No borrowing no taxing no Vat collection no increased tarrif no toll gate. Democracy is too bogus the cost of government alone |

Dogalmighty17:You are right. Gen Gowon was asked this exact question being the Author of the Festac Idea and as a devout Christian he explained that the real idea behind Festac was changed after he was removed from power in 1975 The idea was to bring Africans together to be able to present a more unified front in the international community |

Racoon:FHA destroyed it when they started selling lands allotted for other purpose to rich individuals to build residential properties. In particular, the play ground between most closes where you had the T7, T8, and T9 buildings. This act destroyed things like electricity in some areas as they built their properties on the overground electric cables/channels; drainage systems; water systems etc. The insecurities of the late 80s led to loss of esthetics as most homes built fences and took away the original beauty without the fences etc. |

It cuts across all government establishments of that era. You should see Ikeja GRA if you're complaining of how Festac is. The good thing is that much of the Ikeja GRA is now a business district but what made Festac's case worse is the neglect of the government. If they can just decide to treat the place not as an ordinary estate but a place where revenue can be generated with ease, they'll renovate and revamp the face of Festac again. Like I said earlier it cuts across all government established estates like this all over Lagos. |

ZUBY77:. My family and friends moved into Festac in the 80s. Our block still had a phone in the stairway even though it wasnt working. FHA provided cookers and fridges for every tenant. Things went south when they started selling off everything including playgrounds. They ignored the planning and housing structures as they sold every bit of land. |

MrAmaechi:The one with the structure is 22nd also depends on where you are looking at it from.. could be 4th Avenue as well. |

Rindo69:Went there last year, you go weep. All the families and friends including neighbours have moved out and sold their properties. Na shops, car sellers and illegal structures full everywhere. The roads are terrible and filled with craters not potholes. The large gutters along 2nd Avenue and 32 Road have been overtaken by weeds and muck. When it rains there is heavy flooding. |

It is people with the mentality that Lagos is a no man's land that destroyed FESTAC. |
