Well, I think it's okay. I do get full 5G and 4G bars. The 5G works well during the day but unstable evenings and the latency is high. More of a reception issue anyway.

Luckily I found a 4G band that works well. I locked to that and it's been working well. Getting the 50mpbs steady and the latency is much better.

The IDU has single SSID option for 2.4ghz and 5ghz (which you can disable) and it has been working flawlessly.

The powerbank should do at least 3 hours at least. Not fully tested. The performance is stable while on powerbank.

There are so many functions you can adjust on the IDU.

This is my experience so far.
Nice.

Like someone said on this thread and I agree, it really boils down to Airtel and their service quality.

So irrespective of the device, when Airtel decides to happen to you or your location, you will feel the negative impact. That said, they are trying with experimenting with the devices. These devices are not cheap.

I have checked more on the new ODU, the OEM is Zowee Technology, said to be a reliable manufacturer. They made it for Huawei and it ships as 5G CPE MAX 6. It's slightly below the ZTE ODU in some comparisons but we'd never reach those extremes with our paltry 50mbs subs.

This one also comes with WIFI 6 IDU, so makes sense a lot. We'd see.

Airtel cut corners on the ZTE ODU because incorporating the Wi-Fi 7 capable IDU (G5 Ultra) for it would have been quite expensive and probably won't make business sense.

Has anyone tried pairing the ZTE G5F with any other IDU like ZTE MC801A? I have MC801A, which was bought as cracked MTN 5G router. I might try experimenting with it when my ODU arrives. It is a Wi-Fi 6 device.

My hope is that MTN also adopts this same Airtel ODU strategy, with same pricing and all. MTN seems to have better coverage in most locations.
MTN is already spending billions on fiber X, what will they need ODU for??... This ODU is more like advance router which still failed many time with inconsistent speed

This is way better and more realistic than Fiberx in my opinion especially due to accessibility.

Fiberx deployment rate is very poor and is none existent in most major cities & locations.

Cost wise, this Airtel model is also cheaper as it is OTA & doesn’t require much physical connection or set up.

Yes the ODU model is not perfect, but considering how long Fiberx has been in existence compared to this, the ODU is a superior business model.

With better coverage and reach, I think MTN should consider adopting this model as a form of FiberX 2.0 with similar pricing. This is the only way they can stay competitive in the unlimited internet market and make good profit for investors.

Fibre deployment is very expensive, and as a result, they can't deploy it everywhere. Hence the need for fixed wireless access (FWA).

FibreX is available in an estate directly opposite mine, and the cables pass through the front of my estate, but given that my estate is not a serious estate because of the useless developer and estate management we have, we will most likely never get FiberX. The only other viable option is a fixed wireless access, like the one Airtel is currently providing.

MTN adopting this model will be a game changer for consumers. Airtel will be forced to sit up and respond to requests

I will pick airtel ODU first b4 mtn fibrex. The coverage of mtn fibrex is very poor, barely covering 6 states out of 36 states in 9ja. Even in the said states, only few locations hv it.

We don't really appreciate what we have until we loose it. Airtel is the saving grace for many average Internet users. Imagine having to do multiple subscriptions of meagre data every few weeks and having to pay 25k for unlimited/1tb data. Even mtn 1tb data for 1 year is over 200k. It's a no-brainier for me.

I would choose airtel any day anytime, provided I get relatively decent speed.

192.168.118.1 for the ODU.

Thanks brother, I didn't want to bring down the odu, but had to in order to get the password too.

First impressions this seems like a more robust equipment especially when compared to the zlt.

I knew you had to because of the password. The installer told me to snap before he hung it.

Honestly, I think the ODU and IDU are a perfect pair. Airtel just need to improve their network for better user experience.

This worked, maybe because they are both ZTE devices. But I also think many of the regular 5G routers would work as IDU for these ODU/IDU pairs.

Was it just plug and play, or did you have to change any setting on the MTN ZTE MC801A? I have same ZTE MC801A from MTN, though still locked.

Locking has absolutely zilch to do with it. So it will work for you too.

It's almost plug and play but you have to do something first.

1. Remove any sim inside 801A and plug it in.
2. Connect to it via your pc or phone and login, usually through 192.168.0.1
3. Change current mode to cable broadband mode. It will ask you to select the LAN port which will act as WAN (ie the one you will plug the LAN cable from the ODU connection unit (the power bank)).
4. Connect everything as you would have done. You can power 801A with its own power bank or from the shared power bank, which is what I did to reduce number of cables and adapters.
5. When everything is connected, choose 'dynamic' as connection mode and you are good to go.

You don't have to do these the next time. Just remember the port you chose as WAN port.

Oh yes. We now have Cat 6 router for the G5F ODU grin
My MC801A was lying useless. Now the MF296A will have to be the one sacrificed.

The install helper app really helped me get a good place to put the ODU for the strongest band in my location with poor network.

What's the purpose of this, I don't really understand. The unlimited sim is still inside the odu? This means the 801A is better than the 296A.

Yes. It's a cat 6 device. Performance will be noticeably better when you connect multiple devices.

I think in my case I wouldn't have gone to get cat 6 device, but I have one sitting idle, so I gave it a try.

I believe this should also work for the ZLT X25 and X25 pro as sold by both Airtel and MTN, just remove the Sim in it or disable esim and connect via lan cable, it's plug and play. Retains all wifi settings as previously used.

I have tried it with Starlink and it works flawlessly but not tried it with the Airtel ODUs.

Also of note is the old original MTN ZTE hynet flex router, works as well.

So options plenty for anyone have the old hardware laying around gathering dust.

I have not been able to find the connection mode settings on the X25. Please let me know if you do.

That's the problem I have with the ZTE, if you are having 3CA before, then after locking you will see it reduce to 2 or even 1, so if you are unlucky to lock a strong data cell, you will have reduced network speed, but the ZLT still maintains the 3CA throughout most of the day. Go to developer setting under your router page, input your password and reset it.
Just look at the PCI in both pictures, the ZLT had 3 while the ZTE had 2. And it's usually like that for most part of the day
Hello sir
