According to the report by Vanguard News on 14th November, 2025. Nigeria’s route to the 2026 FIFA World Cup could dramatically change based on where the Super Eagles stand in the global rankings when the intercontinental play-offs begin. The format strongly favours the two highest-ranked teams, granting them a direct pass into the final round in Mexico, while the remaining four must fight through an additional knockout stage.


Under this structure, six teams travel to Mexico for the play-offs. The four lower-ranked sides are drawn into the semi-finals, forced to battle for a place in the final. Meanwhile, the top two ranked nations skip that early test and await the winners in a decisive showdown that determines who books a World Cup ticket.



For Nigeria, the implications are significant. If the Super Eagles are ranked inside the top two by the time the play-offs kick off, their mission becomes far simpler: just one match in Mexico. Win it, and they return to the World Cup stage.

However, if Nigeria slips outside that bracket, their task becomes more demanding. They would need to win two matches — a semi-final and then a final — to secure qualification. Combined with their earlier triumph over Gabon, it means the team might need three consecutive knockout victories to reach the World Cup for the first time since 2018.
