Churches Worst Hit By Armed Herdsmen Attacks In Enugu, Lose 117 Worshippers by attackgat(op): 7:50pm On Nov 15, 2025
Scores of Christian worshippers have been reportedly killed by armed herdsmen in Eha-Amufu communities in the Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State, with 31 lives lost between January and June 2025 alone.

This is according to figures released by the Anglican Church authorities, detailing the names of the churches that were attacked and casualties lost in each onslaught.

A new report released by the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) also said the armed herdsmen group devastated 14 Anglican and Catholic parishes across Eha-Amufu between May 2021 and June 2025, leaving 117 worshippers dead, hundreds of homes and farmlands destroyed, and entire communities deserted.

In its report, Intersociety described the killings as “systematic and faith-targeted”, alleging that Jihadist militants had infiltrated and occupied no fewer than 950 forest locations across the South-East, including 56 in Enugu State alone.

The Intersociety chairman, Emeka Umeagbalasi, said the atrocities were sadly being downplayed by political leaders in the region.

He added that while governors across the region, Peter Mbah of Enugu State, Charles Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra state, Hope Uzodinma of Imo state, Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi state, and Alex Otti of Abia state, have publicly denied the presence of armed herdsmen, the evidence on the ground suggests otherwise.

Intersociety’s data detailed 14 separate church attacks in Eha-Amufu alone, with both Anglican and Catholic parishes among the victims.

According to the report, in May 2021, the Holy Anglican Church in Okpokwu, Mgbuji, was reportedly invaded, leaving 25 worshippers dead.

A series of coordinated assaults in January 2022 affected seven parishes, including St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Ogbete, where 40 members were massacred.

Subsequent incidents include an attack on St. Barnabas Anglican Church, Ngele-Aguiyi, where four people were killed. An attack on St. Michael’s and All Angels’ Catholic Church, Okpurigwu, in which two people were killed, and an attack on the Anglican Church, Obodoudo, Aguamede, in which five people were killed.

Others are an attack on; All Saints Anglican Church, Onitsha-Ebia, in March 2024, in which one person was killed. An attack on Christ Anglican Church, Amaofia, in May 2024, in which four people were killed.

An attack on Victory Anglican Church, Iyi-Asaa, in June 2025, in which two people were killed.

An attack on Our Saviour Anglican Church, Iyi-Asaa, in June 2025, in which nine people were killed, and an attack on St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Ikpakpara, in June 2025, in which 20 people were killed.

The report noted that the attacks have forced the closure of at least eight out of nine parishes under the local episcopal authority, while thousands of displaced residents now live as refugees in neighbouring communities.

A senior Anglican priest in Eha-Amufu told Intersociety researchers that he and local volunteers buried eight decomposing bodies of parishioners within a single day after a January 2022 attack.

“Many were abducted into nearby forests and slaughtered. We retrieved their bodies days later. Soldiers only came after the attack to help pick corpses, but never when the killing was happening,” the unnamed priest said, according to the report.

Other residents claimed that a helicopter allegedly “linked to the attackers” was sighted hovering over the area before major assaults, dropping suspicious objects believed to be weapons.

The report accused soldiers of the 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, of failing to respond to distress calls during attacks but assisting only afterward to retrieve corpses.

Ipob/ESN that normally turned themselves to fullanis don't let us know the truth. I hope this will not lead to mockery of Igbos when international really conduct investigation only to confirm ipob/ESN carried out the attack to enforce sit-at-home. This will really expose ipob/ESN more to international communities and may end up ridiculing Igbos.

ESN was in that community and Fulani retreated sharply. It was the politicial class that made ESN retreat completely from that axis because they are lackeys to the central Government.

Anyway, let Dem come again... grin

It's that simple. angry

Moreover, when are you going to be concerned about your region that is already a launchpad for the Terrorists?

Are you safe in Kwara, even after Amotekun and OPC noise?

Go sleep..loser.

Ignorant people like you who have never been to Enugu state, and dont know the terrain, like to talk nonsense. Nobody has to enforce sit at home on Sunday worship day for Christians, they are already at home on that day

I decided to edit and forgo the abuse you so richly deserve and focus on the issues!

You just can’t bear the fact Mazi Kanu and IPOB have been right with their predictions all along, and that their formation of ESN was necessary seeing as the useless and inept Buhari/Tinubu gov’ts were unable or unwilling to stop the terrorist attacks in the south-east….a region adjudged the most peaceful until their coming in 2015! The equally useless, slavish and appeasing south-east governors have their heads buried deep in the sand, and, by their inaction and denials of the problem, are almost just as complicit in the matter as the federal gov’t they’re beholden to!

What reasonable argument could you possibly make to support your claim that, since 2015, Ndigbo have decided to use IPOB/ESN to go after their own kinsfolk….attacking multiple churches in their region and murdering churchgoers, and forcing those lucky to have survived the attacks into IDP camps!? Have you been living under a rock these past few years or just arrived from Uranus not to know Mazi Kanu and IPOB have reiterated countless number of times that the ‘sit-at-home’ was called off, and that the ekpa dolt (my choice of adjective not theirs) does not speak for or represent the organisation!?

It can’t have gone unnoticed that there are certain types of groups and individuals intent on trying to sell the false narrative that IPOB/ESN are ‘terrorist’ groups! Simply by noting who’s trying to fly this kite, it’s easy to narrow down their ethnicity to one of two possibilities….and equally easy to determine their political leanings!

So why do you only care about insecurity, only if its in the South-East, when you are not from there?

You will not remember insecurity if you hear that armed herdsmen killed one hundred people in Benue today, but you will remember insecurity of anyone sits at home in three days time on Monday
