Drama hit the Ugandan Parliament when a parliamentarian, Atkins Katusabe, who had spent some time abroad, returned and began speaking in a new phonetic English, leaving his colleagues confused.

One female member of parliament had to ask him to speak in simpler English that everyone could understand, stressing that the matter under discussion was serious and important. She also suggested that he provide written notes so colleagues could follow along and understand him properly.

While some believe Katusabe’s time abroad may have influenced his pronunciation, others disagreed. The video has sparked various reactions online, with some viewers noting that Africans often try to adopt foreign ways of speaking after traveling abroad.

Some Africans generally resent excellence.

Being exceptional a little more than usual draws an immediate ray of hatred from all around except those who admire it.

They may not be comfortable with the man's transition.

That man is clear enough to be understood. They should quit being petty.

But on a serious note, it's sad that we measure status by accent and it boils down to extolling anything foreign while looking down on anything local.

My university back in the day was a private university.

It was secured to some extent.

We had some "foreign" students and they had some "higher" status than the rest of us.

They were mostly children of Nigerians in the US.

Turns out that they all had some sort of mental health challenge.

In the course of my present career, I have had to interact with Chinese workers in Nigeria.

We defer to them and all.

Turns out that some of them are prisoners doing their time here.

My point is that in Africa we defer too much to anything foreign and it's detrimental to us, our wellbeing and development.
