Breaking News!

@OfficialPDPNig Elective National Convention Elects Dr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki as National Chairman, Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja as National Secretary, Others at the Historic #Ibadan2025 Gathering.

Ibadan, Oyo State

In a landmark moment for Nigeria’s opposition politics, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has successfully concluded its Elective National Convention at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Adamasingba, Ibadan, electing Dr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, as the new National Chairman, and Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, former Deputy National Chairman (South), as National Secretary.

The convention, attended by over 3,000 delegates from across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, marks a pivotal step toward party unity and renewal ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The proceedings, which commenced on November 15 and spanned into the early hours of November 16, unfolded with remarkable efficiency and enthusiasm.

Senator Ben Obi, overseeing the electoral processes, guided delegates through a transparent voting mechanism that underscored the PDP’s commitment to democratic principles.

Dr. Turaki’s emergence as National Chairman was near-unanimous, following the withdrawal of rival aspirant Senator Yakubu Lado, positioning him as the consensus candidate to lead the party into its next phase of resurgence

I thought they just confirmed Damagum as the Chairman. The PDP is finally on its final destination to disintegration. The party is dead just waiting to be buried. They should have opted for a caretaker committee and fight out the various court cases. This convention is a nullity. Who is going to sign the nomination form for Gov. Adeleke?

You don't even know that the Caretaker Committee has to be affirmed at the Convention.

Only the National Convention can confer leadership at that level. So whichever way like I always said, it was inevitable that the Convention should have taken place. It is people who didn't want it to hold that plan to kill the opposition. This NWC's tenure ends Dec 7, of which anything they do after then becomes a nullity, so what should they have done?

He was made substantive National Chairman for two reasons:

A. One, incase it goes South, it's Damagum IN & OUT.

B. Some of the decisions can only be taken when you have a substantive National Chairman.

PDP will eventually put it's house in order. If not for the rigging that is inbuilt in the APC, no Nigerian election will APC ever win..not even councilorship. But having said that, I blame the citizens for allowing anything and everything our politicians do.

For the peace and future of Nigeria democracy the INEC should just accept this and the supreme court should affirm it so everybody can move on ….nobody will deny the facts that all Wike faction members are anti Pdp working for Apc and this is not a good impression to the world and this is part of why they call Nigeria disgraced country

Good news
PDP should put their acts together this time.

That idiot Tinubu is using to keep PDP down must be expelled, so the party can start afresh.

I have noticed how much interest apc rats have over the destruction of PDP. But what most of them fail to understand is that Nigeria will always have an alternative political party, so no matter what Tinubu does he will never be able to make Nigeria a one party state, never.

Absolutely!

Hopefully the cases in court can be trashed, especially the one in the court of Omotosho. That appears like a trap. Hopefully the appeal court can dismiss it and PDP can move on.

As for Wike and his co-sojourners, their expulsion was long overdue. Without tackling Wike’s arrogance, PDP would continue in the limbo.

The governor of Rivers state is in a dilemma, just like Adeleke. Fubara wants to remain in PDP, but he cannot, as he has to follow Wike’s direction. Given a choice, Fubara would have been in the convention. Sorry for going out of line with this.

Wike lobbied PDP committee to be Atiku’s running mate – Ex-gov’ship aspirant

Thu, 29 Sep 2022 14:33:04 WAT

Muazu Magaji, a former governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party in Kano State, has alleged that the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, lobbied members of the party’s committee constituted to advise the presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, on the choice of his running mate.

Magaji disclosed this while speaking on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily, on Thursday.

The Kano politician also argued that there was no proof that Atiku promised Wike the vice president position as claimed.

The PDP committee had recommended the Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa; Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel and Wike.

The committee, however, scored Wike above the other two contenders but Atiku decided to settle for Okowa. A decision that has since unsettled Wike’s camp.

Magaji, however, claimed that Wike lobbied to be scored ahead of others, adding that the Rivers State governor should not be trusted with important positions in the country.

2023: PDP and politics of healing Wike’s self-inflicted injury

Then, the race began in earnest for three years now, reaching a frenzy with the works of the two PDP committees on zoning. The first was the Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi committee on the zoning of the PDP party offices. The Ugwuanyi committee quickly told the world the committee’s assignment did not cover zoning the office of the president. Though this was true, the question is: why didn’t the Ugwuanyi committee zone the PDP chairmanship to the North without aligning it to the divide that would produce the PDP presidential flag-bearer? The second committee headed by Gov Samuel Ortom of Benue state was specifically on the zoning of the presidential ticket and, with the votes of the representatives of all the 17 Southern states without any exception, the Committee unanimously recommended throwing open the PDP presidential ticket, which the PDP NEC simply upheld.

One thing irrefutably stands out – Wike shot himself in the leg. Here was a man who had an overarching influence on both committees but could not insist that the ticket be zoned South. Many had wondered why? The reason is also relatively in plain sight: the Southeast factor. As the clamour for zoning of the presidential ticket of the PDP to South reached its crescendo, many had pointed out the fact that though the PDP Constitution had prescribed zoning of the office of the president to be between North and South since the South-west and South-south had taken their turns in producing the president and the vice in this current dispensation in the persons of Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, zoning this time around, should not just be to the South but the Southeast.

Atiku Abubakar went a step further by offering to step down from the race if it would be agreed that the touted zoning to the South would mean micro-zoning to the Southeast. Wike and the rest could not take the Atiku challenge maybe because Atiku would likely back Peter Obi, who was his vice-presidential running mate in 2019 and an ally. The prospects of Peter Obi picking the ticket if PDP zoned South was so real compelling Wike to go for an open contest, believing he could pick it up ahead of Atiku, Tambuwal and Bala Mohammed, given his large war chest.

ddippset:
Says a man who hijacked the party and singlehandedly produced the last 4 National Chairmen of the party for his own selfishness.

Says a man who accepted nomination to be running mate to Fulani Atiku.
He knew it was injustice to give Atiku the ticket yet he lobbied to be the VP.
grin grin

He knew the party had to go South for the 2023 election, yet he still put Secondus as National Chaiman just to hijack the party..
Only to push Secondus out because he wanted the ticket 2023.

This man remains the biggest problem of PDP.

He can only deceive and fool his minions, not reasonable people.

The Lamido case is simple.
He outlined that he has interests to contest for the Office of PDP National Chairman and alleges that the form was deliberately not sold to him. Like I have said many times, that is a Pre-election suit that is non-justicable.

Our Supreme Court has said it many times that political parties are voluntary organisations and it is outside of the Court's Jurisdiction to dabble into that. Been within the reach of the domestic affairs of a Political Party, the court is bereft of jurisdiction.

Justice Lifu knew what he was doing when he made that order, all they wanted was to ensure the National Convention did not hold. Every other thing becomes academic. The worst for them was for it not to hold. Now I hear people talk about INEC not attending hence it's nullity and I laugh.

Did INEC supervise the Primaries of Akpabio?
Did INEC supervise the Primaries that affirmed Ahmad Lawan.

INEC decided to stay away citing Court Order. It is well within their rights. In each of the two judgements above, the Supreme Court was clear that it was the responsibility of the Party to inform INEC, whether INEC attends or not, it's their business, they must be informed, which they affirmed they were informed about it.

Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022:
Every registered political party shall give the Commission at least 21 days’ notice of any convention, congress, conference or meeting convened for the purpose of “merger” and electing members of its executive committees, other governing bodies or nominating candidates for any of the elective offices specified under this Act.

Section 82(5) of the Electoral Act 2022:
Failure of a political party to notify the Commission as stated in subsection (1) shall render the convention, congress, conference or meeting invalid.

Hence, non-attendance does not connote a nullity, it is not notifying that does.

I will come to the Omotosho issue on another thread.
anonimi:
Which one is the caretaker committee inside this news?

Did INEC attend this event huh
To the best of my knowledge, NO.

The person I was replying was saying appointing a Caretaker Committee will have been better and I am saying, even in the appointment of the Caretaker, only a Convention will have affirmed it, meaning the Convention will eventually have held between now and December 6 this year.

chisomkachy:
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has withdrawn the alleged money laundering suit it filed at the Federal High Court against Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa.

Naija News understands that the anti-graft did not give any particular reason for its application for withdrawal.

Following the application to withdraw, Justice Nicholas Oweibo discharged the ‘lien/Post No Debit’ placed on Obasa’s three accounts in Standard Chartered Bank.

The accounts are (US Dollars) 0001852063; (Current) 0001852056 and (Saving) 5002309624.

The judge also set aside the ex-parte orders he made on September 15, 2020, which led to the freezing of the accounts.

Recall that the court on September 15, 2020, granted an interim order freezing Obasa’s accounts following the EFCC’s application in a suit marked FHC/LCS/1064/2020.

The agency had said it was investigating the Speaker for the alleged offences of conspiracy, diversion of funds, abuse of office and money laundering.

But Justice Oweibo, on August 16, 2023, heard the application to unfreeze the accounts in his chamber.

During the hearing, the EFCC was represented by Mr. Sulaiman I. Sulaiman, while Obasa was represented by Mr. Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).

The EFCC lawyer told the court that the application to unfreeze the accounts was pursuant to Section 44(2)(K) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Sections 26, 29 and 34 (1) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004, and under the court’s inherent jurisdiction.

Section 44 of the Constitution concerns constitutional rights to property.

Justice Oweibo held: “It is hereby ordered that an order is hereby granted to the respondent/applicant setting aside the ex-parte orders of this court made on the 15th day of September 2020 upon the ex-parte motion of the Applicant/ Respondent in relation the funds of the Respondent/Applicant domiciled in the accounts stated in the following schedule:

“ACCOUNT NAME, FINANCIAL ACCOUNT INSTITUTIONS, TYPE OF ACCOUNT, 1. Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered, (US Dollars) 0001852063 2. Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered (Current) 0001852056 3. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered (Saving) 5002309624.

“Issued at Lagos, under the seal of this Honourable Court and by the hands of the Presiding Judge this 16th day of August 2023.”

If this convention later produce candidates for elections through primary elections, the candidates produced will lose their seats if they win during main elections. Exercise in futility.
