joelbooks:It's because the ban on importation of rice during Buhari tenure has been lifted by Tinubu. The president should also life the ban on beef and poultry products |

Ikaeniyan0:He should also allow importation of bread since our bakers don't want to reduce pride of bread even though price of flour has reduced. |

bigpicture001:Uncle don't be smart by half. Is your salary the same before Tinubu came in. We all know he devalued the naira so the point remains that if you convert the current price to dollars, this is the cheapest it has been for ages in Nigeria. |

AndroBlaze:I pity u my guy, politicians have really dealt with ur ability to critically look at something... So to u.. this is progress...? How much is ur child skl feez now compared to before tinubu.. are the teacher now using vsat and AI plus space science tools to teach ur pupil..? What made the cost to jump..,? Ok.. we all should celebrate because of 40k increase in wages.. when inflation rose by 300%... See, u mentions the wrong fella... I am a grounded data statisticia , na u go run |

bigpicture001:Oga keep quiet, grounded data "statisticia" (whatever that means) that cannot admit that relatively rice is cheaper than it has been for ages. I am not discarding the fact that it is still beyond most Nigerians but it is disingenuous to expect that it can be cheaper in Naira than when he first came in as Naira was devalued by almost a factor of 3, and Rice farmers and sellers are making less for each bag of rice they sell in relative terms......statistician that cannot handle basic maths. N38,000-47,000 in May 2023 ($82- $104) N65,000 in Nov 2026 ($45) ...and dollar even buys less than it bought in 2023, which means the dollar price now should be higher and not less. |

The reason why rice has been expensive for some time was because government banned its importation. The government wanted the country to be self reliant in terms of rice, and not have to import. The problem with rice production is not that the country can't grow rice, the problem lay in the fact the country lacked competitive and comparative advantage in its production. There are countries which are much better in producing rice and even much cheaper price. So, in order to produce rice locally, government basically banned its importation so Nigerians would be forced to purchase ocally made ones, no matter how expensive it was. I have always wondered how making food more expensive helps the poor? Perhaps, there are some poor people who don't mind paying 102k for a bag of rice. Countries do best when they focus resources in areas they have competitive advantage. The country should pour resources into crops it is good growing such as sesame seed, cocoa, plantain, sorghum, millet and much more. |
