Kano State Unveils Historic N1.368 Trillion 2026 Budget

Nigeria News Today: Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has presented the 2026 Appropriation Bill totalling N1,368,127,929,271 to the Kano State House of Assembly, marking the largest budget in the state’s history. The proposal underscores the administration’s commitment to completing legacy projects and promoting inclusive development across the state.

Capital-Heavy Budget Prioritizes Development

The 2026 budget features a remarkable 68% capital expenditure (N934.6 billion) and 32% recurrent expenditure (N433.4 billion), one of the highest capital-to-recurrent ratios in recent Nigerian state budgets. Governor Yusuf emphasized that these allocations reflect his administration’s development priorities, with Education topping the chart at N405.3 billion (30%), followed by Infrastructure at N346.2 billion (25%), and Health at N212.2 billion (16%).

“These allocations demonstrate our unwavering determination to invest heavily in human capital development, safeguard the well-being of our people, and lay the physical foundation for sustainable growth,” Governor Yusuf said.

Sectoral Focus and Social Investment

The budget plan also emphasizes the Economic and Social Sectors. Key allocations include Agriculture, Security, Commerce, Water, Environment, Tourism, Women and Youth Development, and provisions for People With Special Needs. This approach reflects the administration’s intent to deliver tangible improvements in citizens’ livelihoods.

Governor Yusuf described the 2026 Appropriation Bill as “a bold but realistic roadmap” aligned with the aspirations of Kano residents, and urged the State House of Assembly to expedite its passage.

Lawmakers’ Oversight Crucial for Implementation

He stressed that effective oversight and partnership with lawmakers are essential to translate budgetary plans into actionable projects and services. The Bureau News notes that this historic N1.368 trillion allocation positions Kano State for significant infrastructure expansion and social development in the coming year.

Education 30%, a good one. This allocation is above UNESCO's recommended 15-20%.

It's left for the citizens to demand for accountability and transparency.

And even with free education, the people will not go to the schools. They had free education in the north 30 years ago, yet here we are.

Kano state can survive without Federal Government allocation. It generate billions of naira in trade monthly. That's why the state is called "the center of commerce."

I had my torchlight on, searching dilligently to find the breakdown of how the said amount of money will be generated, like how much of it is expected to be from Internal Genrated Revenue (IGR), Loans etc. - but alas nothing! If you ask me, this Governor is simply preparing the grounds to borrow money against the 2027 elections

Kano State, LGAs receive ₦348.2bn from FAAC in 8 months..You forget that the new Tax law comes to play next year...so if they collect N500 billion this year, I would expect next year to be at least N700 billion...about 50% of the budget...minus Internal Generated Revenues. Our local banks are also very well liquidated, so they can fully fund state budgets. If invested well and roads are tolled..with PPP, the budget is very feasible.
