The Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday sentenced Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to life imprisonment for four of the seven terrorism-related charges brought against him, choosing mercy over the death penalty.

Presiding Judge James Omotosho clarified that Counts 1, 4, 5, and 6 carried life imprisonment, while Count 3 attracted a 20-year jail term without an option of fine, and Count 7 a 5-year jail term without an option of fine.

“Life is sacred to God, so despite I am not persuaded, I must temper justice with mercy; the terms are to run concurrently,” Justice Omotosho remarked.

Convicted under the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, Kanu faced charges that, by their severity, could have warranted the death penalty. The court, however, exercised judicial discretion in favor of life imprisonment.

The sentencing brings to an end a decade-long trial that has drawn both national and international attention.

The fairness of Nnamdi Kanu's judgment is questioned not because he is seen as blameless by all, but because the process appears politically motivated, illegal in its foundation, and applied with a clear double standard. The state's overwhelming focus on him, while seemingly turning a blind eye to the actions of other powerful individuals who have caused greater tangible harm to the Nigerian populace, creates a powerful and persistent perception of injustice and a two-tiered legal system.

The Federal Government should appeal the judgment. Kanu deserves death sentence.
