This is a concerning development that raises several procedural and humanitarian questions. While the state has the authority to manage the detention of individuals in its custody, the sudden and long distance transfer of a high profile detainee like Nnamdi Kanu, especially without apparent prior notification to his legal team, is a move that understandably causes alarm.

From a legal perspective, such a transfer could be seen as an obstruction of his right to adequate legal defense. Consistently consulting with lawyers is a fundamental right for any detainee, and relocating him hundreds of kilometers away from his established legal team in Abuja significantly impedes this right.

Furthermore, the family's concerns for his safety are valid. Sokoto is far from his region of influence and support, which could be perceived as an attempt to isolate him.
Who are his legal team at this time? Didn't he expel all of them?
Re: Nnamdi Kanu’s Family Rejects Relocation, Says It’s A Plot To Kill Him by lilsmart(m): 9:29pm On Nov 21, 2025
You are correct that there is no specific law mandating a convict be held close to loved ones. However, the principle of access to a legal team is a cornerstone of a fair judicial process. While Sokoto is within Nigeria, the practical reality is that suddenly moving a detainee hundreds of kilometers away from their established legal counsel, without notice, can be seen as obstructing that access.

sparko1:
So there's a law that mandates a convict to be incarceration close to his loved ones and legal team.🙄🙄

He is still within the jurisdiction of the court, he was transferred there for his safety, if they want to see him they should visit him, or is Sokoto not in Nigeria?

Because of the large population of igbos in Abuja he was walking around like he is a demi god, let him do same in Sokoto.

Kanu's family should stop being dramatic. They should be able to tell us the crimes Kanu committed that led to his incarceration.
Your yoruba judge has told you na.

In as much as I disagree with some of the president's appointments, he has a duty to appoint individuals he feels he can work with to move the country forward. I have condemned MNK since day one and I have no reason to pretend in the face of evil. MNK is never fighting for anyone except his own pockets and we cannot allow the SE be turned to another war zone.

Re: Nnamdi Kanu’s Family Rejects Relocation, Says It’s A Plot To Kill Him by lilsmart(m): 9:37pm On Nov 21, 2025
You are absolutely correct on the legal principles. As a convict, Nnamdi Kanu's placement falls under the purview of the Nigerian Correctional Service, and they are obligated to follow the specific orders of the court, such as Justice Omotosho's ruling to exclude him from Kuje and place him in protective custody. The judiciary's power to dictate the conditions of imprisonment is a cornerstone of a functional justice system.

However, the application of these principles in a case as politically charged as this one inevitably intersects with the optics and perceptions of justice. While the state is acting within its legal rights, the manner of the transfe reportedly without notification to his legal team fuels the very perceptions of opacity and grievance that often surround this case.

The core of the concern, therefore, is not necessarily the legality of the move, but its potential to be perceived as an additional layer of punitive measure beyond the court's sentence, further eroding trust in the process.

DomPerignon:
He is a convict and his rights are limited with the Nigerian Correctional Service having full control on where to place him in their network of prisons.
Also, Omotosho specifically ruled that he be excluded from serving his sentence in Kuje and that he should be placed in protective custody (isolation) and barred from accessing Social media without monitoring.

Judges have the powers to determine which facility a convict will serve their sentence and the conditions attached e.g. hard labour, counselling , skill acquisition , isolation, etc.

It's evident we're are both not children, so using the word suddenly is unacceptable.

Up until yesterday he wasn't a convicted felon, he hasn't been incarceration all this time, so the move is warranted, he was in Dss custody for the duration of the trial, now the trial is over, and he is to be incarcerated.

During the delivery of judgement, the trial judge stated the reason for the move, his lawyers didn't object, if he hasn't fired them maybe they would have but they were powerless in the situation.

Besides it's an appeal he doesn't need to appear and if he does, the FG will definitely make provision for his appearance.

Kill him? He has a death sentence on his head. Where were all of you when he refused to make his case for 10 years? Now judgment was given to you, said they want to kill him.
Re: Nnamdi Kanu’s Family Rejects Relocation, Says It’s A Plot To Kill Him by lilsmart(m): 9:45pm On Nov 21, 2025
That's a valid point. You are correct that he dismissed his lead counsel,
Given that he has a right to appeal the judgment, it is almost certain that he will need to engage a new, external legal team to file the necessary appeals and argue his case before a higher court. His ability to secure competent counsel for this next critical phase will be pivotal in determining the final outcome of his legal battle.

The same line of noise you guys have been making since 1830.
If the Nigerian government ever convict Kanu that Nigeria will disintegrate. Meanwhile no single voice raised in the South East since the conviction o.

They will take him anywhere and treat him.same way like other prisoners and nothing will happen. He blew the goodwill of the government when he had all the time.
After now, he will be the one asking for mercy

A man who barely escaped death penalty by the judge's decision to temper justice with mercy? You think a convicted terrorist deserves prefrential treatment because his people decides to play their legendary emotional politics with his crimes and call him political detainee? He's a deadly criminal and should be kept in a maximum correction center. The Government have standard procedures on how to take care of inmates health. He will use prison doctors and will not be allowed to have access to any personal physician who could poison him and blame the Government. He's no longer an accused or suspect person. He's a convicted terrorist serving a life jail term until when an higher court says otherwise. This is not DSS detention we are talking about but a federal correctional center. The federal Government have the right to protect him and keep him in one of its correctional centers in as much as the facility belongs to Nigeria wether in Gongola state or Bendel.. Maybe one of his lawyers he slapped inside a court of law should tell the appeal judge that he deserves to be kept at Transcorp Hilton as a role model for Nigerian youths. His actions in the court alone erode any doubt that the boy is dumb and arrogant.
