Uncontrolled Migration Top Security Threats In Southwest Says Gbenga Daniel by bestofnollywood(op): 4:25pm On Nov 22, 2025
Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy and Senator representing Ogun East, has identified rapid population growth and uncontrolled migration as the primary security threats facing Nigeria's Southwest region, even as he acknowledged the area's relative success in managing broader security challenges.

Speaking at the Senate Ad-Hoc Committee on National Security Summit held in conjunction with the Lagos State Government on Friday in Lagos, Daniel highlighted the paradox facing the region: while the Southwest has weathered national security crises comparatively well, internal demographic pressures pose an unprecedented threat.

"When we look at the state of security in the nation, I think the South West has done considerably fairly, and that I believe is commendable," Daniel stated, placing the region's security performance in a positive light relative to other parts of Nigeria grappling with insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping.

However, the former Ogun State Governor cautioned that beneath this relative stability lies a ticking time bomb. The region's rapid development and economic opportunities, he explained, have attracted unprecedented migration flows that often lack proper documentation and integration mechanisms, creating fertile ground for criminal activities.

"Population explosion remains the biggest challenge that plagues the Southwest," Daniel stressed, noting that while the region continues to battle kidnapping, farmer-herder conflicts, terrorism, and banditry, the unaccounted-for migration wave poses a distinct and mounting threat to public safety.

The Senator pointed to Lagos State as the epicentre of this migration challenge, describing it as "the most volatile" in terms of population pressure. However, he warned that Ogun State is increasingly experiencing similar pressures, signalling that the challenge extends beyond Nigeria's commercial hub.

To address this multifaceted challenge, Daniel called for strategic deployment of modern technology and enhanced infrastructure development. These measures, he suggested, are essential for better population management, tracking, and integration while simultaneously addressing the underlying factors driving uncontrolled migration to the region.

The summit, chaired by Senator Tokunbo Abiru, brought together a diverse array of stakeholders committed to strengthening Southwest security. The gathering included lawmakers, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and heads of major security agencies. Represented at the high-level meeting were officials from the Nigerian Police Force, the Department of State Security (DSS), the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Navy, the Lagos Neighbourhood Watch, and the Peace Corps of Nigeria, among other security and community organisations.

The convergence of these institutions underscores the gravity with which leadership views the security landscape and the recognition that sustainable solutions require collaborative, multi-sectoral approaches that extend beyond enforcement to encompass technology, infrastructure, and community engagement.

I still discussed this serious matter with some fellow landlords yesterday. Is there anything we can do to stop this influx of foreigners into the Southwest? My street here in Ondo State is currently dominated by northerners (many of them are from Niger republic). They have turned every corner and uncompleted buildings to shacks and residents. Their kids are everywhere, they don't attend school. Early in the morning they are already roaming about the community scavenging for scrap iron and plastic bottles. They know every in-and-out of our area than our own children.

Modified:
Contrary to most comments on this thread, this thing is happening all over southwest; not only Lagos.

Nobody is migrating to Ekiti, Osun, Ondo, Oyo and Ogun states though.

It's a shame and an enormous embarrassment how everyone from South Westen Nigerian hides under the cloak of Lagos state to claim "YorubaLand". It's just like someone from Sokoto claiming Kano state simply becasue they are both NW states.

It's a pity how people are so ashamed of their own state that they deny it just to claim Yorubaland, beacsue of Lagos.

Tinubu should restructure Nigeria to significantly reduce migration to the 3 major parts of the country.

With the way Lagos, Abuja and PH are strategically located, it looks like you cannot make it in Nigeria if you don't live in any of those 3 places.

Oh! I thought the North and the South West are one grin Otunba should calm down the South West governors are ahead of the game Amotekun is on the ground for them (all we need is a well armed Amotekun with more sophisticated weapons). And I hope that SS, and SE can emulate the SW governors to secure their territory

What do you mean? Are you saying our fellow brothers cannot come to our region?

I don't like this kind of divisive statement, we are one with our Fulani brothers, saying things like this is not good. Please Afenifere should call Gbenga Daniel to order

We are all one Nigeria Mr Gbenga Daniel.

A Nigerian from Zamfara should feel at home in Ogun State.

Only Igbos are fake Nigerians according to your APC

There is nothing like migrants within a country.

We only have rural-urban migration due to unequal opportunities and poor leadership.

You cannot call your fellow countrymen and women migrants, it's a treasonable offense if Nigeria had law. Calling your fellow countrymen and women migrants ought to attract a long jail term because it's a treasonable offense but in Nigeria, the law is selective and that's why Nigeria is not working.

If you want to control who comes into Southwest, you Yoruba leaders should stop being cowardly and be bold and courageous enough to demand for a separate Yoruba or Southwest country where you will have your own country's immigration, Police and Border Security to checkmate migrants coming into your country.

But as long as you guys want Nigeria to remain one indivisible nation, you have no legal right or backing to stop law abiding citizens of Nigeria from moving and living freely anywhere they want in Nigeria.

Northerners come mainly during their dry season. They always return to the North to farm but whenever they are around they are always all over the place.
They work and are potential tax payers.
SW should be around 55 million of Nigeria's 220 million.

influx of foreigners? So northerners are foreigners? LAGOS was the concentration hub of federal resources and investment for years, it's normal for more Nigerians to migrate to Lagos and states around Lagos.

The solution is for the government to spread development to other regions and encourage more companies to have their HQ outside Lagos. NLNG is an example in Rivers State. So many companies that have nothing to do with finance have their HQ in Lagos. Thank God for Abuja if not Lagos population you are complaining about would have been double.

This is 2025 with technology, some people in Nigeria work remotely for companies in US and Europe. Any job that doesn’t need physical presence should allow their staff to work remotely so they can live in other states where cost of living is cheaper and their salaries will have more value. Their spending will boost local economy of these states. As more people earn in these other states they will spend their money and it will trickle down to the common man who wouldn’t need to migrate to Lagos to make a living.

I laugh when I see companies talking about climate change and reducing carbon emissions meanwhile they make their staff come to work everyday, 2 hours in traffic burning fuel and congesting the road when they can perform from home.
