Angelfrost:What the islamist lack in weapons, they make up in zeal. They are idealogy driven by religion which is probably the greatest or in this case, the worst form of motivation. For instance, after the Taliban took over Afghanistan when the Americans left, many felt their economy would collapse after moat foreign aid dried up. It did not. Why? The new government ensured taxes were collected, and not just diverted by the tax collectors, or not collected at all. This saw a massive increase in revenue and they could survive without foreign aid. It is with the same type of discipline and conviction they fight the war. It is not that the army isn't having successes but are overwhelmed by their sheer numbers. An army commander said they would need 500,000 troops on ground to deal with these islamists. |

RealLordZeus:Y In every country the land army get the highest funding due to number and base they have. Not all State have airforce base but all State have more than a base for the Army. So you see few reasons why the army get more funding? |

9 Sirjamo:You are the one appropriating the tag of a fool here. The market realities in both countries are different, so your comparisons are jejune. How much is the salary of a Major General in Nigeria? Compare that with the monthly earnings of an army officer of the same rank in the US. I am tired of you pro government megaphones who will go to any length to excuse the abysmal failure that is your uncles administration. You excuse everything and encourage every bad omen just to make a catastrophic administration look manageable. It is insane! |

Pootle:Truly it is small but if this small amount is judiciously spent on the intended purpose, trust me, Nigeria will breathe a sigh of relief. But trust me 90% of that money goes into private pockets and never used for the earnmarked purposes. But then this is Nigeria. |

Airforce should have the largest budgets. We need to partner with some countries to get some bombers or fighter jets. |

Putinofrussia:Those nations use a fraxtion of their GDP as benchmark and are productive so have goodGDP thus good defence budget. In Nigeria, we produce next to nothing. We have paid our useless leader more than USA pays theirs but have no value for it. How will funding of pllice force for example, help make police start being fair to all and not one ethnic group? |

jmoore:The people in Bornu do believe the army can do better and are disappointed with them. The problem with military jets is that they are just too powerful. They are fighting against what can be considered guerillas, so they are not a conventional army. That means you always have civilains around. Lots of civilians will get killed This has happened a lot of times already. The power of a helicopter gunship is frightening enough, and you now upgrade to figher jets, it would be a massacre. Nevertheless, I do believe the army is underperforming due to greed, medocrity and poor morale. Yes, poor intelligence may be part of it but a bigger problem may actually be the poor response to good intel. The army is informed that a group of Boko Haram fighters in their 100s are heading to a town or even their military base and nothing is done to stop them. Why are laser guided missiles? Why not send a drone to intercept and decimate them? N5,000 is voted daily for their feeding. What's the quality of their feeding? I won't be surprised if it does not pass N2K. Tinubu won't do much as he does not want a coup. If a lot of the higher ups are only interested in enriching themselves, then you have a problem. |
