Memories of Murder - what a hopeless movie. As a viewer I don't even know what I gained by watching this movie. I wasn't rewarded in anyway.
A 2hr slow burn with no pay off whatsoever.

Omo this one left me scarred for real.

"Again....it is incredibly frustrating and exciting at the same time to be a Nigerian..Chinua Achebe.

As a ardent follower of this industry, i have always yearn for a time when Nollywood will make socially conscious movie that are grounded in our everyday reality, of late, and not just the crass and razz flicks they tend to do more often, and this i am happy to say, this flick is way up there with the former.

It opens with a newly wedded couple been kidnapped by armed bandits, but as the flick progresses, it unveils, an interconnected rot across religion and ethnic lines, that has birthed this horror of a situation we are currently witnessing.

The movie is so technically detailed, like the writing was so air tight and ridiculous good, that every little twist and turn was accounted for, even i, who is always critical of how shallow, film plot from these parts seems to be, had to applaud the flawless writing on display. The production value was top notch too, saw it on HD, and it was pleasing to watch , despite the sour subject matter.

I know the movie had probably be announced weeks before this release last Friday but the timing of the release couldn't be more apt, considering the mess of a security situation we currently find ourselves as a nation. So i was all the more baffled at our brothers and sisters from the north, who were talmbout "Ban the movie"...."Cancel Netflix", these Mfs probably just say the trailer alone 😩, and went unnecessary berserk because seeing the whole thing, they got all the stereotypes absolutely 100% spot on! and perhaps the only one i had issue with, was how efficient they portrayed our security agents to be, because ain't no way these brothers move this efficiently 😩.

The failure of our northern brethren to separate Islam from the actions of these armed bandits, is what is still fueling this stereotype, These miscreants doesn't represent Allah or the Prophet's (SAW) message in anyway. They twist some hadiths to justify their actions. Maan, i will sooner come down from a Molue, when a turbaned mf yells "Allahu A'kbar" than when someone else yells praise the Lord. 😩

Anyways, I thoroughly enjoyed this film, the finest film I have seen from these parts, since i saw "With Difficulty Comes Ease" (2024), last year. just top shelf stuff...easy easy recommend.

The issues I had with the writing was the sub plot of that 25m dude defrauded his company of.
There was no need to add that into the movie.

And I also didn't like the fact that the people that saved the other hostages were also bandits albeit sour bandits.

Imo, this part was necessary, to show how dire his situation was prior whilst trying to save face as a good husband, cut off by his parents, his wife needing huge sums to combat cancer and all, her going to the company for help and them refusing him help cuz of that, and forcing her to go to his parents....a totally plausible situation

Again, i couldn't fault this part. In real life kidnapping cases, as sad as it might seem, all the victims aren't the same, in terms of social class and all, when the ones with good social standing, are either rescued or Ransome paid, nothing is heard of those of lower social standing, that remain with the kidnappers.

Now, we know who were the ones with the high social standing amongst the kidnapped victim, in this flick, and these were priority and were duly rescued by the security agents. So, for it not to seem like the remaining victims faith, was unknown, the only plausible way, for a closure to thier sub plot, was what played out, and I totally agree with that part of the writing.

I couldn't even fault this movie much...i so much enjoyed it.

Brilliant movie. One of those films that will really vex you so much and break you at the same time. Korean police and their laws dey be like say dem incompetent.

Na after I don calm down reason am na im I understand wetin the filmmaker dey pass across.

Easily the best movie for me from Bong Joon Ho's filmography. Edges out Parasite slightly for the gripping take.

You no go enjoy The Chaser be that..... Similar trope. You go vex wella too but it has a payoff.... If you can call it that. Still left me pissed..... Maybe even more than Memories of Murder because some people chose to be really stupid at the end.
