Does A Mother Has Automatic Legal Right Over Daughters Landed Property? I Bought by Primers(op): 6:41pm On Nov 24, 2025
When I was single, I bought a piece of land and gave my mother, the documents to keep for me. I later built a house on that land. After I got married, I asked her to return the documents, but she told me the property now belongs to her simply because I am married. In other words, she said that everything I owned before marriage no longer belongs to me but to her. My siblings also support her decision.

The most senior member of our family has called them several times, instructing them to return my documents and property, but they have refused to listen. I am confused and don’t know what to do. How can I reclaim my property?

Your mother lied to you. I don't understand why you feel it is Ok for her and your siblings to manipulate you. 😂😂😂😂😂

Go ask your mother to explain to you the real reason why she thinks it's OK for her to try to scam you in such a way. 🥱🥱🥱

On another note, hope you got yourself a prenuptial agreement before the marriage to separate your property before marriage from your marital communal property with your husband. This is 2025, and everyone should already know that marrying someone means that you join up your finances and life together, exposing you to great potential loss if the marriage eventually goes under. And in Nigeria, the man gets access to the bulk of all the wealth and property associated with the marriage in the case of dissolution so you want to property what is yours no matter what. undecided

this isn't new though funny. when they say the heart of man is desperately wicked, this is a clear case of it.

thread with caution, I would love to know is she and your siblings residing on that property? either of both parties is any of them inhabiting the property? the answer would really assist in resolving this issue.

Nigerians are not thieves like oyibo who their crooked courts have allowed them reap where they did not sow. Nigerian courts are not father Christmas, so prenup is not needed.

All she needs is to fight for what is hers and the courts are aware that when the man is in this situation, they always give this judgement, so they are duty bound to do same to the gander.

Nigerians are not thieves, yet almost every divorce case, in all parts of Nigeria— irrespective of the age of marriage— the woman ends up with literally nothing, not even alimony in most cases, from the marriage. And this even when it is clearly established that she did do invisible labor to support her husband and family through it all. Even then, the marital communal property is ruled as belonging only to the man who, most likely, financially abused his wife throughout the union. Most Nigerian men are just simple wicked entities... worse than thieves. undecided

This is just the downside of women marrying richer men. Nigerian courts do not allow unlawful enrichment and all those silly arguments Americans throw in their courts are completely unacceptable and invalid here. And all this is because it is known that when a woman marries a richer man she married him because of his riches. And just Regina Daniels vs Ned right now she's got to go with nothing. That's the Law.

Women married off to middle-class men walk away with nothing after a divorce — in most cases, not even child support, but we are to believe that it is because of marrying richer men? Nigerian men hate their women, and their children are all the conclusion one can take away from this. undecided

Whether middle class or poor, once the man is richer than her, she gets nothing. It's the children who are protected and it is here maintenance is directed to as even a matter of must. But in the eye of the Law aunty is an adult and she can work, so she is to go and work her own living
