I’m Proud Of My Nigerian Heritage – Arsenal, England Star, Bukayo Saka by Great100000(op): 7:08am On Nov 25, 2025
Arsenal attacker, Bukayo Saka, has spoken on how proud he is about his Nigerian heritage.

The England attacker noted that his parents had their upbringing in Nigeria, adding that his family background shaped both his identity and values.

Saka played international football for his country of birth, England.

The winger, who grew up in England, has never forgotten the land of his parents.

In an interview with the BBC, Saka said, “My name is Bukayo Moses Ayoyinka Temidayo Saka. I am very proud of it [my Nigerian roots].

“Both my parents grew up in Nigeria, so many of their values have been instilled in me.”

Saka was in Lagos in June 2023 where he was hosted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the State House.

The winger, 24, wore the captain armband for the Arsenal side that beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 in the Premier League on Sunday.

It is only someone with an incredibly low self esteem who'd talk down on his origin and heritage.

They abound. Some talk down on Nigeria to be acceptable to their adopted countries.

Some come on twitter daily to harvest negativity and sew them in aimless twitter rants and want to lead this great country.

Some even call the country a disgraced country in their twitter rants. There was a thread yesterday where he asked if the country is cursed or if we are cursed. He ended up telling lies and proved that he was the curse.

Nigeria is great. We are rising to become a global force. Our citizens are doing the country proud with their exploits. Very soon, tourism would be booming, economy would become on a path of sustainable growth, our youth shall be employed and live happy lives.

We are the powerhouse of Africa. The sleeping giant is waking up and with that comes scare-mongering for weapons fashioned against Nigeria.

Bukayo Saka, we are proud of you.

Ngozi-Okonjo-Iweala, we are proud of you.

Akinwumi Adesina, we are proud of you.

Yemi Cardoso, we are proud of you.

Bola Tinubu, we are proud of you.

All the Nigerians in diaspora making exploits in their chosen fields, we are proud of you.

Those who talk down on the country daily to benefit from negativity, you can be proud of yourselves, but this great country will NEVER fall under the weight of your curses.

cheesy

However, Mr. Saka we are proud of you. You are a star, for England and Arsenal (my own club). But please, forget about Nigeria. There's nothing to be proud about Nigeria.

Be grateful to your parents and England who have offered you a good livelihood and a platform to grow. Here in Nigeria, so many young football stars has be killed by Nigeria government sponsored terrorists.

Awwwn. It's painful, right? You can't grasp how someone can't be bitter. I understand with you. That acute agony since February 2023 has stayed with you so long not to affect your perception.

He didn't say he was proud of his Nigerian roots. He mentioned his full Yoruba name, and said he was proud of it. The op assumed "it" there meant Nigerian roots. Saka actually meant his Yoruba roots.

He never fails to showcase his Nigerian heritage. He always use Nigerian music as his background music on his social media posts. His fiance is a British lady born to Nigerian parents just like him. I like the way he's very intentional about his Nigerian heritage and he will surely pass it down to his kids
