Prof. Okoronkwo Kesandu Ogan: Nigeria’s First Obstetrician-Gynaecologist and a Pioneer in Medical Leadership.

The below photograph captures Professor Okoronkwo Kesandu Ogan with his family in the 1960s or early 1970s, standing beside their Mercedes Benz—a symbol of dignity, professional achievement, and the rising Nigerian elite of the post-independence era. Calm and confident, the family represents both personal success and a remarkable chapter in Nigeria’s medical history.

Early Life and Background
Born in 1919 in Bende, present-day Abia State (formerly part of Imo State), Okoronkwo Ogan grew up in an era when only a small number of Nigerians had access to Western education, let alone medical training. His brilliance and determination set him apart early in life, leading him into an academic and professional path that would break national barriers.

Education and Medical Training
Professor Ogan travelled to the United Kingdom for his medical education, a journey many Nigerian medical pioneers of his generation undertook. It was in London that he completed his training in obstetrics and gynaecology—a field that few Africans had entered at the time.

His Qualifications made History:
He became the first Nigerian to formally qualify as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, marking a groundbreaking achievement that opened the door for future generations of Nigerian specialists.

Professional Career and Contributions
Upon returning to Nigeria, Ogan quickly became a leading voice in the advancement of women’s health and medical professionalism. His influence spanned both clinical practice and national medical administration.

Notable Contributions include:
-1). Pioneer President of the Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON), established in Lagos in 1965.

Under his leadership, SOGON became the foundation upon which modern Nigerian obstetrics and gynaecology practice was built.

-2). Chairman of the Federal Public Service Commission in 1975, one of the highest administrative positions in the country.
His appointment reflected national trust in his integrity, leadership, and administrative experience.

-3). A respected senior consultant and academic who trained numerous Nigerian doctors, many of whom went on to become national leaders in medicine.

Family Life
The photograph reflects a warm and united family setting. Professor Ogan shared his personal life with his wife and children, who accompanied him through the height of his career. The car’s number plate, LG 4224, indicates an Ilesa registration, hinting at the family’s residence or movement within southwestern Nigeria during that period.

Though he was a national figure, he remained a devoted family man whose home reflected the stability and dignity that defined his public career.

Death and Legacy
Prof. Okoronkwo Kesandu Ogan passed away in 1990, leaving behind a generation of medical professionals who benefited from his pioneering work. His legacy endures in multiple ways: As Nigeria’s first Obstetrician-Gynaecologist, he laid the foundation for the modern practice of women’s health in the country.

Through SOGON, he helped institutionalise professional standards and collaboration among Nigerian specialists.

His leadership in public service showcased the role medical professionals could play beyond the hospital—shaping policy, governance, and national development.

Today, Professor Ogan is remembered as a trailblazer whose contributions helped position Nigeria as a regional leader in medical expertise and healthcare development. His life remains an inspiring example of excellence, service, and national pride.

The 1st in Igboland and probably the 1st Igbo Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in defunct Eastern Nigeria wink

As at 1919 when he was born and was just suckling his mother's bosoms,
some Yoruba families here in Lagos and Abeokuta, have already produced qualified Obstetrician and Gynaecologists trained in top British schools. The Amalgamation of Southern and Northern Protectorate that eventually formed what later became Nigeria had not even been done when the Yoruba have produced world-class Obstetrician and Gynaecologists! The old money don't shout wink

Below is a picture of Massey founded in 1912 here in Lagos even before he was born. This predates Lord Lugard's amalgamation in 1914 and Nigeria's independence in 1960 as a country and all the professional Healthcare team were Yoruba. Descendants of these Yoruba Healthcare professionals running Massey with the British are still alive till date. They will just be laughing at the ignorance of false claim that he is the first. It's a fraudulent claim, he's not the first.

The picture of Massey below was in1912 picture o, 7 years before he was born!

There has been qualified Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Yorubaland even before he was born.
First in Nigeria kọ, First in the Solar system ni.

Below is also pictures of Sacred Heart Hospital in Lantoro, Abeokuta founded in 1895 and an archive of University of Glasgow showing 2 Yoruba Medical Doctors graduating from their medical school in 1918 https://universityofglasgowlibrary./tag/james-churchill-vaughan/

Not everyone and especially old money families like to shout. Shouting/Bragging is for new money and awọn "ọmọ oju ori ọla ri" who just hit fame/money.

He needs to remind people he's Igbo because if this same man was involved with crime, the government of Tinubu will instruct Abike Dabiri to make sure the whole world knows he's Igbo.

Let me also add that the The first vice-chancellor of University of Ibadan, the first university in Nigeria was Professor Kenneth Onwuka Dike.

The greatest damage the civil war did was the mental defeat it instilled in the minds of the losing side.

Till today, they always try to explain their relevance to others and always endeavor to seek acceptance by showing that they are not utterly useless.

I hate people arguing just for the sake of it.

The discussion is specifically about who the first Obstetrucs and Gynaecologist in Nigeria is, not about who the first doctor is. O&G is a specialized field within medicine, so being the first doctor and being the first Gynaecologist are two different things. The claim being addressed is about specialization, not general medical practice.

In your long reposte, you didn't provide evidence of any Obstetrician. Telling us there has been yoruba medical doctors is BS when the point of the post is Gynaecologist

Worryingly:

Racoon didn't say the doctor is the first doctor in Nigeria. He said the first Obstetrician. I can't find in your post evidence of any Obstetrician
You're ignorant. I will not drop names here. They are old money Yoruba families.

How can he be the 1st Obstetrician and Gynaecologist when registered Maternity Hospitals with Yoruba Obstetrician and Gynaecologists have been operating here in Lagos and Abeokuta long before he was born or western education reached the southEast? That is a fraudulent claim that he is the first. He is not and can never be.

There have been Obstetrician and Gynaecologists here in Lagos and in Abeokuta before even the Igbo crossed path with the Yoruba, got exposed to western education and before the thought of amalgamation of Nigeria was even thought by Lugard. The maternity hospitals in Lagos and Abeokuta were managed by Obstetrician and Gynaecologists of Yoruba extraction. Go to these facilities and you will see their pictures and names wink Those facilities are still in operation till date. They will never brag about it.

These Yoruba Healthcare professionals were Yoruba and not Nigerians because Nigeria has not even amalgamated let alone formed as a country.

You start counting your own civilization from when Nigeria was formed but the Yoruba sophistication and western education was like a century ahead of yours and that of Nigeria. They were not even described as Nigerians but Yoruba.

I will not forget to thank Bishop Ajayi Crowther for taking the western education from Lagos and other parts of Yorubaland to the Igboland.

This illustrious Nigerian is part of the vision of Reverend Crowther for his people yet Bishop Crowther is not even a Nigerian but Yoruba. He died a Yoruba, not Nigerian, in 1891, more than two decades before amalgamation.

Iboes and. Lies

What specific qualifications did he have e.g was he a MRCOG.?

All you see is declaration then repeat of declaration

Just tell us in simple language

He attended XYZ MEDICAL SCHOOL got MBBS IN19.....

Then trained as Gynaecologist from 19,,,,to 19,,, ,

And got ABC qualification as a Gynaecologist from JKL institute

Simple truth is in those days and today many doctors practice as gynaecologist without specialist certification

They may do one to 3 years as a senior resident without becoming a certified specialist and them come out to practice

Many did that

What we should ask is the first who had a formal certification either MRCOG or US board certification

So go and check for first Nigerian to get MRCOG
