Who is Lateef Kayode Are?
Are is one of three names submitted to the Nigerian Senate by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, seeking confirmation as a non-Career Ambassador.

BACKGROUND AND EDUCATION
- Graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Psychology in 1980 from the University of Ibadan and won the University Senate prize, Faculty of Social Sciences prize and the Department of Psychology prize for best graduating student.

-Obtained a Master's degree in International Law and Diplomacy from the University of Lagos in 1987.

MILITARY CAREER
- Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in December 1974 from the Nigerian Defence Academy as part of the NDA Regular Course 12.

-Graduated among the best ten student officers and was deployed to the Nigerian Army Intelligence Corp following his graduation from the Defence Academy.

- His NDA Regular Course 12 mates included officers such as General Owoye Andrew Azazi (a former CDS), Colonel Sambo Dasuki (a former NSA), and Admiral Ganiyu Adekeye (a former Chief of Naval Staff).

- Served as an Intelligence Officer, Directorate of Military Intelligence

- Rose to the rank of Colonel

- Compulsorily retired from the Nigerian Army by General Sani Abacha in 1993

SECURITY APPOINTMENTS
- Appointed Director General, State Security Service (SSS) by President Olusegun Obasanjo (May1999 - 2007)

- Served under Presidents Obasanjo and Umaru Yar'adua as longest serving SSS boss, until his removal by the latter in August 2007

- Appointed Deputy National Security Adviser by President Goodluck Jonathan (2010)

- Served as the Acting National Security Adviser in 2010 following the resignation of Aliyu Mohammed Gusau (with whom he worked with at the DMI during their Army days)

* His home was invaded in 2015 by the Lawal Daura-led SSS following a dispute over his Ikoyi properties.

* Kayode Are is of the Owu ancestry. He is married with children.
