Two National Guard members were shot in downtown Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said.

The Metropolitan Police Department is responding to the incident, which occurred just blocks from the White House shortly after 2 p.m. The guardsmen’s condition is unknown.

Meanwhile, President Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff is under fire after he reportedly instructed a Russian official on how to coach Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to approach Trump as the U.S. seeks to broker an end to Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

Trump defended Witkoff, calling the interaction about a proposed peace plan nothing out of the ordinary.

Republicans on Capitol Hill are also casting doubt on the proposal itself, pushing for harsher sanctions on Russia. But if a deal is secured, they are likely to fall in line — despite any misgivings. Ukraine signaled Tuesday it has agreed to the “core terms” of the deal.
