Cow business should be treated like any other private business. Herders should readjust to this reality.

Atiku believes in ranching, deserves our votes – Ortom

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has disclosed that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is a sincere advocate of ranching as solution to the lingering herders crisis in the country.

The Governor who spoke Thursday at his reelection campaign rally in Katsina/Ala also stated that the former Vice President was not a religious fundamentalist.

He reiterated his appeal to the electorate in the state to vote massively for Atiku who was on the same page with the people of the state and all PDP candidates in the forthcoming election.

He observed that while President Muhammadu Buhari was canvassing for the opening up of cattle routes which would impact negatively on the land of the people of the state if implemented, Alhaji Atiku had been establishing ranches for his cattle and even proceeded to build feed-mills.

He said, “ranching is critical to the survival of our state because it remains the best solution to the incessant crises between farmers and herders with monumental loss of human lives and property over the years hence we must vote against those who opposed it.

The President-elect said he would work with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to *bring down the exchange rate to N200 in his first term.*

“My administration will collaborate with the Central Bank to harmonize the fiscal and monetary policy to achieve immediate stabilization of the value of the naira against the US dollars and other currencies and in the short term, strengthen the naira by boosting the supply of foreign currency and moderating demand.

“The short-term goal is to achieve a naira/dollar rate of 300 naira/US$ and gradually achieve a less than 200 naira rate over the next four years, Tinubu stated.

Muhammadu Buhari, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has promised to ensure that the naira would be equal to the dollar in value if voted into office.

Practical steps have to be taken by both the governments and the herders few years prior because cattle must feed at all times. We need to wake up and be practical with the ways we find solutions to problems in this country

Ranching is difficult in Nigeria. It's easier in places where you have dairy cows that produce milk that you sell for millions. That's in addition to the fact that the economics of those countries can support ranch-raised beef. If you ranch all the meat cows in Nigeria, 1 kg of meat may go for N14k. Once this happens, cheaper meat imported from China or wherever will take over. Unfortunately, people don't understand the challenges - that's why you hear tired lines "Cattle is a private business and the government should not get involved."

Without direct government intervention and subsidies, the ranches will fail.

On second thought, let me explain. No, I don't support open grazing. I'm against open grazing. But I'm also against those who refuse to see what ought to be obvious - that the herders won't give up grazing for ranching unless steps are taken to encourage ranching.

I read what you wrote. Open grazing us archaic. We produce less than 20% of beef that Argentina produces using less space. Our beef is tough and unregulated. Does the government subsidise other businesses such as poultry and Fish farming. Why is cattle different? You people will never change

But I'm sure you think your short run long run argument will appeal to anyone and save our agric sector by the time Chinese or South African beef has taken over the market. And that is why 10 years from now, we will still be here arguing about open or no open grazing. And people will continue to be killed.
