Retired Police Officers Protest Pension Bill Delay At National Assembly by Glimpsetv(op): 5:52pm On Nov 27, 2025
Retired police officers in Nigeria have continued their protest at the National Assembly, specifically accusing the Senate, led by Godswill Akpabio, of deliberately delaying the passage of a bill that would exempt them from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

In a circulating video, several retired officers were seen climbing the fence of the National Assembly complex, while others stood outside chanting, “We no dey go o, we no dey go.”

Their spokesperson later explained that they are members of the Retired Police Officers Forum and that they have been attempting to gain access to the building but were blocked by security officials at the gate. He noted that some members managed to enter the premises and were waiting inside for the others to join them. According to him, they insist on going in to meet the Senate President, whom they believe is the one holding back the passage of their bill.

The National Coordinator of the Retired Police Officers Forum, CSP Raphael Irowainu (Rtd), also alleged that top-ranking police officers—from AIG to IGP—have been secretly removed from the CPS without legal approval, while lower-ranking personnel remain trapped in the scheme. This, he said, has created deep resentment and demoralization within the force.

The core demand of the protesting retirees is to be removed from the Contributory Pension Scheme and moved to the old Defined Benefit Scheme—similar to what is enjoyed by the military and intelligence services—which they believe provides a more secure and adequate pension after retirement.

Summary:

Retired police officers in Nigeria stormed the National Assembly, accusing the Senate led by Godswill Akpabio of delaying a bill that would remove them from the Contributory Pension Scheme. Some officers climbed the Assembly fence while others chanted outside, insisting on meeting the Senate President. Their leaders allege that senior officers have been secretly removed from the scheme, leaving lower-ranking personnel behind and causing widespread resentment. The retirees are demanding a switch to the old Defined Benefit Scheme, which they believe provides fairer and more secure pension benefits.

Honestly these policemen are beginning to make me detest them even further. Do you know that if Nigerians gather to protest for the welfare of policemen, these same policemen will deploy and attack the protesters?

I can never understand how the brain of some of these policemen works. Just the other day we saw a retiree admit that while still active in service they were busy escorting politicians to banks to hide stolen wealth and has only come to his senses now that he's retired.

Merely looking at the number of NairaLanders and others viewing and commenting on this thread, clearly shows that NPF has lost the people's sympathy and empathy.

It'll take another century to rebuild lost trust and character

Re: Retired Police Officers Protest Pension Bill Delay At National Assembly by Litmus:
In a country like Nigeria where the majority own land, the government's barebone purpose and national obligation is the provision of security, not jobs. The primary tool for this, at the governments disposal, are the military, police, immigration, including border guards and the secret services.
So, pay these people well, including pensions, and exempt them from certain obligations etc.
