ECOWAS Suspends Guinea-Bissau After Military Takeover by Pakute(op): 2:47pm On Nov 28, 2025
West African leaders on Thursday imposed immediate suspension of Guinea-Bissau from all ECOWAS decision-making bodies, following the military takeover that occurred in the country on Wednesday.

The announcement was made in a communiqué issued after an extraordinary virtual meeting of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council (MSC) at the level of Heads of State and Government, chaired by Julius Maada Bio, Sierra Leone’s President.

ECOWAS expressed deep concern over the unfolding political crisis, noting that voters had shown resilience by participating massively in the polls.

The MSC denounced what it described as the “coup d’état perpetrated on 26 November 2025” and rejected any attempt to legitimise the subversion of the people’s will.

It demanded that the coup leaders immediately allow the National Electoral Commission to release the official results of the presidential election.

The regional body also called for the immediate and unconditional release of all detained officials, including President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, electoral officers and other political stakeholders.

Bio condemned the coup as a blatant violation of democratic norms, stressing that the region “cannot allow the illegal abortion of a democratic process.”

He said the peoples of West Africa, especially citizens of Guinea-Bissau who recently demonstrated their commitment to democracy during the November 23 elections, deserved unwavering protection of their constitutional rights.

It placed full responsibility on the coup leaders for ensuring the safety of citizens and safeguarding both public and private property during the crisis.

ECOWAS further raised alarm over the safety of its personnel and other international observers deployed for the election.

It urged the military authorities in Bissau to guarantee their protection and to facilitate their evacuation and safe passage where necessary.

In response to the situation, the Council invoked the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance to suspend Guinea-Bissau from participating in all ECOWAS decision-making institutions until constitutional authority is restored.

To accelerate mediation efforts, the bloc mandated its Chair to lead a mission to Bissau involving Faure Gnassingbé, Togo’s President, José Maria Neves, Cabo Verde’s President , Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Senegal’s President and Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission.

The Council urged the Guinea-Bissau Armed Forces to immediately return to their barracks and uphold their constitutional responsibilities.

It directed the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission in the country to continue protecting national institutions throughout the crisis.

Reaffirming that it remains fully engaged with developments in Guinea-Bissau, ECOWAS warned that it reserves the right to activate all measures permitted under its protocols, including sanctions against individuals or groups found responsible for disrupting the electoral and democratic process.

Sadly the West African regional body is as useless as it name. It has not no effective negotiating powers in the AU, UN or commonwealth as the imperialists are colluding the corrupt leadership in many of the nations therein to cause political instability, servitude, subjugation, and exploitations only.

Re: ECOWAS Suspends Guinea-Bissau After Military Takeover by Putindbutt(m): 3:14pm On Nov 28, 2025
A very fantastic decision by ECOWAS, these bunch of tadpoles called military coupists won't take you seriously if ECOWAS doesn't put its feet down.
Where are Nigerian opposition?, why are they not crying, wailing and shouting the name of the Sierra Leone's President under whose leadership ECOWAS suspended Guinea Bissau?. Oh, I forgot, President Bio is not running for election in Nigeria, therefore, they can't use his name to score cheap political points. You can imagine if Tinubu was still ECOWAS President, imagine all kinds of things wailers would have been saying about Tinubu. When Tinubu was handling the situations in Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso with iron fist, wailers were screaming all over the place, forgetting that if you failed to send a strong warning, you're laying a ground work for bad precedent. And that's what you have now, where military tadpoles could truncate a democratic system at will. I will also be waiting for Gen Yakubu Gowon to write President Bio asking him to restore Guinea Bissau like he pleaded with Tinubu. Yakubu Gowon also share a part of the blame in this.
Wailers, why are you not screaming President Bio's name like you did to Tinubu?, is it because you can't use his name to get votes in 2027?. Nigeria's opposition are the dullest bunch on earth.
And to those justifying coup because of France's influence in some African countries, what would you say about Guinea Bissau, are they trying to liberate themselves from Portugal, hence the coup?

ECOWAS and AU are the most ineffective confederations in the world! Very useless in everything angry! Na wa o!!

Suspending Guinea as if there's any impact or something reasonable to lose. Since the sahel separation from the ECOWAS and their useless sanctions against them (sahel), what has been the regrets from the region? Maybe we should all gather and ask God for forgiveness (for a past abomination that is not document for us to know), because I don't know if it's just me but I just feel these things are not ordinary and I'm beginning to believe that, Africa is truly cursed...

A lot of Nigerians underestimate the significance and importance of regional bodies like ECOWAS, AU etc.. having visited all west African countries apart from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Cape Verde, I know the benefits and stress free I enjoyed travelling and staying in west African countries.

Very soon, ECOWAS will suspend itself. The maladministration going on in the continent has never been criticized by ECOWAS. More African countries will witness military administration in few years time.

Plenty words, 10000 letter words with no single meaning tueh.

Ecowas is the most corrupt regional bloc in Africa. Extremely corrupt governments, I think it's the reason for continuous coups.
