First off, I am not a supporter of the president. I know he means well for the country but by a confluence of events already in motion long before he stepped into politics at the national level, it appears he is handicapped.

Nigerians have been clamouring that the sponsors of terror and banditry in Nigeria get exposed and dealt with. Indeed they should but I don't think that can be done without settling this country on fire. I'll tell you why in a moment.

There is a straight line that can be drawn from the era of militancy in the Niger delta and the wave of terror that has embraced the north and is now spreading across states in the country.

Without mentioning names, certain governors in the South-South of Nigeria at a time, were providing funding and weapons to militants in the Niger delta. A GOC of a Division of the Nigerian Army in the north west was receiving money from governors in the South South to provide weapons and ammunition to militants in the Niger delta. Reports had it that about 7000 guns or so were supplied to these militants from the armoury of that division. This GOC from the south-south, later became the NSA of Nigeria under the only South-South president Nigeria has had. The illegal supply of arms from the armoury of the army, later became something of a scandal. In the interest of peace, the matter was buried.

Each arm of the armed forces are made up of professionals from each section of this country. They are well trained and can spot illegalities but are constrained to respond because in Nigeria, the C-in-C is all powerful. They may not intervene to address it but they will give reports to prominent personalities from their region.

A South-South president, known to have supplied funds for weapons purchase for militants in the south was something of a shocker. That these militants were behind bombings of Nigerian oil installations, attacks on Nigerian army soldiers and even more shocking, the devastating October 1st bombing in 2010, a bombing Henry Okar a key principal of MEND was implicated in. A certain Wendel Simlin (Reno Omokri) who later worked in the presidency of the South-South, was MEND's spokesperson. He is behind the countless press releases MEND put out threatening the Nigerian state.

The North was taking notes. The South-South president struck a deal with northern politicians after his principal died. The plan was that he will complete the 2 years left in his principals term and run for office for a single term only. The north expected him to stick to the agreement. They were shocked when he insisted on running again in 2015.

That was when the North started to plan on serving him the same medicine he was dishing out. Bombings all over the north became a thing. The Nyanya park bombing was one of them. The Chibok girls kidnap was intended to embarrass him. Key northern officers in the security agencies were drafted. They had no reason for reservations. The president himself had set precedent earlier.

His statement, "my ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian" was laughed at and rang hollow in northern circles. They knew who he truly was and were determined to follow the template he had set. Unfortunately though, what was supposed to be something to get the president then to fall in line, developed an ideology and has taken life of its own.

President Tinubu cannot go after the sponsors of the current Northern upheaval without going after the sponsors of militancy in the Niger delta. Sponsors that now trot around the globe as ambassadors of peace. This is the debacle the president faces.

The South-South created a template, the north copied. The president is now threading water while hoping the ship doesn't sink. Let him breathe!

So we are now blaming the South-South for the North's current madness?

Governors in the South-South were the sponsors of militancy. This is already well documented.

The South-South template is still in use. The North is simply saying, "You did it, we are doing it too."
