The Jews had been plotting to murder Christ since he began His ministration.

On several occasions Christ had escaped being lynched .

Christ was first arrested by Temple guards directly under Caiphas control who brought Him before the Sanhedrin and trialed Him for blasphemy .

They then sent Christ to Pilate who first directed that Christ be trialed by Herod since the crime of blasphemy wasn't part of Roman law.

Herod refused to convict Christ saying this is a religious dispute and had Christ sent back to the Sanhedrin.

The Jews then went back to Pilate with amended charges claiming that Christ had committed treason against Rome and Caesar by claiming to be King of all Jews.

When Pilate did not see sufficient evidence to convict Christ and knowing the Jews had set a trap for him(Pilate), Pilate then referred Christ to be flogged for causing social disturbance.

But the Jews wanted not only Christ dead but Pilate removed as Governor of Roman Mandated Judea.

Pilate had earlier caught the ire of the Jewish elite after seizing a huge consignment of gold shipped from Rome and destined to be stored in the Temple .

This was against Caesar's own edict that banned movement of gold out of the capital Rome. But Caesar had secretly allowed Jews to move their gold out of Rome back to Jerusalem. A small riot broke out and some Roman soldiers were killed.

Pilate was then petitioned to Caesar by the Jews as being the one who caused the riot by sending Roman troops into the Jewish temple. Caesar recalled him back to Rome to face trial in the senate and Pilate had the great orator and Senator Cicero be his advocate.

It was in defense of Pilate that Cicero made his best speech ever about the enemy within. This speech was about how the Jews had infiltrated Caesar's inner circles and decision making owing to the huge debt Caesar owed the Jews.

Pilate was found not guilty by the Senate but Caesar warned Pilate that if there was any riot in Judea again , he would have his head.

The Jews then saw an opportunity to get rid of not only Christ but Pilate as well by threatening to riot if Christ wasn't sentenced to death.

Pilate saw all their plans and washed his hands from the whole sham trial.

Note that Pilate never condemned Christ rather it was the Jewish mob instigated by the Sanhedrin that demanded Christ be executed in place of a hardened criminal.

For carrying out the execution, Pilate nor Rome can be said to be responsible for Christ death instead Christ was condemned by a jury of his own people.
