ANIOMA STATE CREATION: DELTA NORTH LEGISLATORS AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT CHAIRMEN REJECT PROPOSAL FOR ANIOMA STATE IN SOUTH-EAST; REAFFIRM COMMITMENT TO SOUTH-SOUTH GEOPOLITICAL ZONE We, the undersigned elected Honourable Members of the Delta State House of Assembly from the Delta North Senatorial District and the Executive Chairmen of the nine (9) Local Government Areas that constitute the District, having deliberated extensively on the renewed national discourse and legislative processes for the creation of new states in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, hereby issue this definitive statement of our collective position. Our quest for a distinct and autonomous Anioma State is not a fleeting political venture but a legitimate aspiration deeply rooted in history, championed by our revered forebears and leaders. This dream for a state of our own, where our unique cultural identity, language, and developmental aspirations can be fully realized, has been a constant pursuit for generations. We stand on the shoulders of these giants and reaffirm their vision. We hereby state, in the strongest possible terms, our unequivocal and total support for the creation of Anioma State comprising the present nine Local Government Areas of Delta North Senatorial District. We are united in the belief that the creation of Anioma State is a matter of justice, equity, and a necessary step towards fulfilling the political and developmental destiny of the Anioma people. We pledge our full political weight and mandate to actively lobby and support every legitimate effort towards the realization of this goal. The Anioma our fathers envisaged and which we support is the Anioma that is made up of the 9 local government areas of Delta North with it's capital in Asaba. For the avoidance of doubt, these local governments are: A. Aniocha North B. Aniocha South C. Ika North-East D. Ika South E. Ndokwa East F. Ndokwa West G. Oshimili North H. Oshimili South, and I. Ukwuani. Anioma is, and Must Remain, in the South-South. While we are unwavering in our support for the creation of Anioma State, we make it unequivocally clear that we vehemently oppose any proposed move or merger with any part of the South-East geopolitical zone. The Anioma people are historically, geographically, and administratively aligned with the South-South. This position is deeply rooted in our heritage and is non-negotiable. |

Anioma and their identity crisis and confusion are legendary I’m genuinely surprised by the amount of misunderstanding surrounding this issue. The primary reason for proposing the creation of an additional state is simple: the South East has only five states, while other zones have six—and one has seven. The goal is to bring the South East in line with the others. That is the main argument behind the entire campaign. So when people argue that Anioma should not be part of the South East, they completely undermine the very reason the state is being proposed in the first place. If Anioma is excluded, the core objective is lost. It’s also unrealistic to assume other regions would simply accept another zone gaining a new state without opposition. Other regions also desire additional states, so what exactly is the justification for creating an extra one in the South-South instead? Why would that be any more acceptable nationally? What makes this even more puzzling is that some seem willing to abandon the chance of having a state of their own simply because they do not want to be associated with the South East. Many argue that this is because they are “not Igbo.” But they currently exist in a zone alongside Benin, Ijaw, Ibibio, and several other distinct ethnic groups. This raises a deeper question: what real power do geopolitical zones actually have over the internal identity or culture of individual states? Zones are administrative groupings, not ethnic labels. An Isoko person does not suddenly become Efik by sharing a zone, just as an Igala person does not become Nupe for the same reason. The confusion comes from treating geopolitical zones as ethnic identities, when in reality they are not. Until this distinction is understood, the conversation will continue to miss the point. Another level of these Anioma confusion is in the picture of ASABA people protesting against the remo al of ASABA as the state capital of the proposed Anioma....you see how confused this has made it.... The best thing is that they should forget this Anioma state... They are yet to come and firm cohesion ! They are neither here not there..while the Central and South Delta wants them to be out of the picture and they want themselves to be outside the Outside the south east Define confusion again ?

Ned can migrate to Anambra and contest for governorship as a south Easterner and leave Anioma people alone |

IkpuMmadu:If anioma can't be achieved to join south east then another state must be created within south east. I'm of the opinion that anioma state should join south east for equity, but if it is compromised then adada or etiti state should be created. |

IkpuMmadu:If you want a 6th state in the SE zone , then cut and join from Anambra, Imo and Enugu. You are not getting free land from others . |

IkpuMmadu:How can you join people who don't want to be together. The nkuwani people say they have no link with the ibos you want to force them because you want to complete the state. Let the ibos within themselves form their own state. Carry igala ibos and Kwale and even some part of cross river and river state because you want to make a political statement. Even within the ibos they have hatred for the ebonyi man that is clear to the blind. Who will want to be in such a union? This country once them pay some people money them can sell their soul. |

If they are giving a State on the condition that they join Southeast, let them vote it down and remain in Delta State. No State, no complaint. |

Ned brought this idea to make it easier for them to get a state. The SE should look inwards to get a sixth band seventh state others get the seventh |

IkpuMmadu:that's not the full story. The so-called south east stakeholders opted for a settlement by altering Anioma state. Including territories from Anambra and Imo and moving the capital to Orlu. They even changed the name to Anim oma. This is generating resentment from Anioma people. The problem is that the other Anioma stakeholders are more interested in following Okowa instead focusing on negotiation with the southeast. |

They were part of defunct Western region and have their elected leaders in Ibadan. Later , they became part of Mid-Western region and when states came, they were part of Bendel state. When Bendel state was split into two, they became part of Delta state and currently one of the states that make up South South geopolitical zone. There's no point that they have ever been with the indigenous people of South-east so it makes sense that they stay where they belong. Their history of political constituency is closer to the south west than the south east. |

I believe that's its everyone's right to decide where they want to be. However, it makes no sense to destroy your chances of getting your own state because of where you may be zoned If Anioma State is created, whether its in the South South or South East, people will still regard it as an Igbo state because there is no way you will manage to convince anyone that your name is Igbo, your language is Igbo, your tradition is Igbo, but you are something else other than Igbo |
| Re: Anioma People Reject Joining The South East As Sixth State by Felimax(m): 6:00pm On Dec 01, 2025 |
Ki gidgiddy:You can turn the hands of history as much as you can but where Anioma is Igbo does not exist. You should rather say Igbo is drawn out of Anioma and not the other way round. 80% of Southeast draws their ancestry to Anioma land. Look carefully and you will see. |

I dont blame them. They dont want IPOB in their new state. Come to think of it, two people I know from Anioma absolutely hate it when you tag them as Igbo. The others just see themselves as Deltans. |

IkpuMmadu:Go and split Enugu or Imo into 2 in order to get your 6th SE state. |
| Re: Anioma People Reject Joining The South East As Sixth State by Hotfreezer: 7:01pm On Dec 01, 2025 |
Noneroone:Who gave the SE Stakeholders the mandate to alter Anioma state? Who made them spokespersons of Anioma people? Who gave them the right to change the name to Anim Oma state? To add insult upon injury, you want to move the capital to Orlu. If you want your 6th SE State, go and divide one of the states in the SE into 2. |

There's no time Delta north has ever been part of the south east, they were not even part of Biafra, I wander why Ned is trying to force them to where they do not belong |
| Re: Anioma People Reject Joining The South East As Sixth State by DomPerignon: 7:04pm On Dec 01, 2025 |
IkpuMmadu:Your began this your self contradicting post by first attacking Anioma people for refusing to join SE zone as having suffering from identity crisis. But in your concluding sentence , you stated that geopolitical zones are not created based on an ethnic considerations but simply for administrative purposes. Which is it? |

Felimax:I think you guys tend to forget that there is no ethnic group known as Anioma. In fact, there was nothing called Anioma until the 70's when the word was used to denote the Igbo speaking area of old Bendel state. |
| Re: Anioma People Reject Joining The South East As Sixth State by DomPerignon: 8:02pm On Dec 01, 2025 |
Solsix:A poster here wrote that SE delegates demanded that Anioma be merged with parts of Imo and Anambra with Orlu as the capital and then zoned to the SE. How I wish Anioma people and Ned will be foolish enough to accept that proposal. Let's see how Ned will emerge as Governor and how Anioma people will be treated by Orlu and Anambra ibos as lesser ibos. Imagine how an Ibo man reasons for God sakes. No wonder Ned is no longer speaking on this his Anioma bill. |
| Re: Anioma People Reject Joining The South East As Sixth State by DomPerignon: 8:04pm On Dec 01, 2025 |
Solsix:So its lost on you when Ibo delegates demanded Anioma join parts of Anambra and Imo with Orlu as the state capital. How I wish Anioma people will accept this deal. |
